yes, the fan in my mini won't stop spinning. IT seems it's getting hot and staying hot. It's got a Gig of mem in it. IT overheats and goes to sleep. I have to put a gel-ice pack under it to keep it cool.

Should I be concerned?

Ha... I'm thinking I need to reinstall the OS.

Normally I'd say Get a Mac™, but I see you already have one...

Sounds like it could be a thermal-paste issue; there have been problems with too much
being applied, and resulting in a less efficient heat-transfer. Too hot = shut down.

Try using SMC Fan Control or other similar utility to raise the fan speed a bit (to say 2500 RPM).
This will keep the thing cooler and keep the fans from kicking up to full-speed.

I'm thinking you need to install BeOS.. or NeXT works as well.. maybe minix or slack if you want a more user-friendly GUI interface ;)

yes. please critique my site: suehopkins.com, that I just built with iweb 06 (I bet it is not dial up friendly, so let me know how slow it is). Do you think there is an significant advantage to getting iWeb 08? I'm not hosting on dot mac.

Also I want to change the slide show. I've googled around a bit and found some other slide shows, but they are not quite what I want. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being even a chimpanzee could do it to 10 being you'd have to be a 5.14 codewarrior to do it, how hard do you think it is to modify the slideshow_asset folder, to get rid of the cheezy stainless steel surround and give me a black background with captions and a white arrow at the bottom?

"IT seems it's getting hot and staying hot"

My macbook is always hot. I cant sit with it on my lap for too long or I get terribly sweaty knees. Funny.....I have a laptop that I cant set on my lap.

Nature - I forgot you had a G4, knott an Intel...
Maybe you should crack that puppy open and check the thermal paste between the
heat pipe and the CPU. Since it's out of warranty, what do you have to lose?
I read many reports of 1st-gen Macbook/Macbook pros made to run way cooler by
re-applying the paste sparingly.

Sue - very nice! As far as tweaking the code goes, that's been one of the big
complaints about iWeb - you canknott access the code directly. You would have to
open the page in a browser, show the source, and then copy/paste that into Text Edit
or such, and alter, save and upload the file directly to the server. A PITA compared to
the otherwise simple workflow of iWeb. Anyway, I've always thought your art Kicks ASSSSSS ™ ™ ™ ™

Larry - Unfortunately they're knott refund checks, but gift certificates. Still, better than nothing, I suppose...
BTW, When the refurb iPhones were announced 2 weeks ago, I was stoked. I ordered a 4 GB
model for $399.00. It arrived on Wed the 29th. Exactly one week later, a NEW 8 gig
could be had for the same $399.00...Boo fuçking hoo. I simply sent the refurb back,
and ate the 10% restocking fee (Apple kindly sent me a 2-day Fedex label, postage paid).
My new 8 GB iPhone is wreaking major pwnage wherever I go - iHaters™ be damned.

Marlo Thomas - Do you have a 1st-gen Macbook? Those ran notoriously hot.
Have it looked at - you might luck out and get a newer revision if it's still under warranty or Applecare.

Duece 4 - I've been playing with Leopard on a friend's machine, and it's pretty sweet.
Late October is the official word, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were sooner.

Hardman, would you happened to have noticed if the Leopard OS has Boot Camp preinstalled? Or perhaps something even better?

I'm playing with Parallels, seems pretty good, though not good enough to switch all my PC software over.... yet.

Go check to see what batteries you have. I remember there was a recall a year or two ago about a defected series that overheats and causes fires.

http://www.compatiblepoker.com/Apple+Macintosh+Battery+Recall:++Fire+Hazards.new.htm
--------------------------------------

Battery Exchange Program iBook G4 and PowerBook G4
Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances.

The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.

Apple is voluntarily recalling the affected batteries and has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge. This program is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities.

Identifying your battery
Please use the chart below to identify the battery model and serial numbers that apply to your iBook or PowerBook. If the first 5 digits of your battery’s 12-digit serial number fall within the noted ranges, please order a replacement battery immediately.

To view the model and serial numbers labeled on the bottom of the battery, you must remove the battery from the computer. The battery serial number is printed in black or dark grey lettering beneath a barcode. See photos below.

Abe - glad you asked...I was hoping to start a discussion about how Apple has once
again––and predictably––done something about like this to anti-Apple nay-sayers
and M$ apologists with Wednesday's new product announcements:

But (no pun intended) I just went with the flow of the thread...

Duece 4 - Leopard indeed has Boot Camp installed (which is a good thing, since the most
recent beta is 350 MB)...

Stzzo - it's knott a good idea to use a pillow or blanket between the lap and laptop,
as it is very easy to restrict the air vents in the back of the machine, exacerbating the overheating.
Still, if the laptop is anything other than pleasantly warm/slightly hot (even with the processor at 100%
doing encoding/crunching), you've got a problem, and should look into it.

Khanom - a friend with a first-gen Macbook called me the other day about random shutdowns.
I told him to run Software Update. Sure enough, the Macbook Firmware Update he
had been ignoring for over a year showed up, and his problem was solved when he
went ahead and installed it.

Shocking!!!

The pricing scheme is indeed interesting; knott quite sure what to make of it myself.
However, I think there's a tremendous difference between the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
IMKSHO, the Maps feature in the iPhone is a HUGE plus, in fact I would go so far as to
say it alone is worth $100 over the iPod. Plus, internet wherever you have cell coverage.
Email wherever you have cell coverage (4 of my accounts get checked every 15 minutes).
The iPhone has a camera. I almost forgot to mention the the iPhone has a phone,
with the most kick ASSSSSS™ ™ ™ ™ user interface (by far) yet seen on a cell phone.

Maybe the Core 2 Duo Macbooks run cooler than earlier models, as well as the MBP?
I encoded a batch of videos using Visual Hub for about an hour straight, with the MB on my lap.
It wasn't uncomfortably hot. Still, I wouldn't mind trying the iLap™, or something similar...

As I mentioned in my triumphant First Supertopo Post from iPhone! thread, the Razr
was $500 with a 2 year contract when it came out. Within a couple months
they were $100, then eventually free. A friend got her Razr for $350 just a few months
before they were free (with 2 year contract).

Anyway, I think we'll see a 16 gig iPhone very soon (MWSF?) for the same $399.
I think I'll get the new 80 gig iPod when they hit the refurb store - they should be around
$170 or so.

"I think I'll get the new 80 gig iPod when they hit the refurb store - they should be around

Not a big fan of refurbished stuff.

The problem with my first iPod video wasn't detectable by Apple testing and after they exchanged it and sent me a working one, they may well have shipped my defective one as refurbished without repairing it. Hard disk was out of spec, and it didn't work at altitude or on airplanes. The iPod was spec'd to 10000 feet, but didn't work in Tuolumne. And they don't test for that spec.

I've gotten a couple of refurbished things with rechargeable batteries that wouldn't hold a charge.

And I just got a refurbished Palm (in exchange for a defective brand new one) with a busted power switch.

In fairness to apple, I don't know anyone who has had problems with a refurbished iPod.

I was hoping for a widescreen iPod with larger capacity. The widescreen/toucscreen should be good for viewing video, but large storage capacity is required too.

Anyone know the SAR levels of the iPhone?
