How come some climbers need to get stoned so much to enjoy climbing? Is it fear they try to dull? Are they unhappy people? Medical reasons? Please enlight me. And remember berate me kindly....

Should have titled it Stoned Masters, if I recall none of the Stone Masters got stoned. Maybe some can post up here and confirm or deny this. Use to get high while climbing and we always said, "there's room to get higher" once on top of the climb. Ummmm let's see, Tarbaby, Bachar, Can't Say, or any one else care to comment!!!!!
Peace
I won't berate you Jiimmy, I remember another Jimi from "back in the day".

There's a difference between passing a bowl before or having a "j" afterwards and pulling bong tubes all day at the stone. If I get too ripped, my edge is gone and so is the good hard leading; and I feel that I have wasted my day out climbing (no pun intended).

A couple of tokes might go down well after a challenging pitch while waiting for your partner to lead through but I believe that heavy loads and great leads are largely mutually exclusive.
But bivies,....

Many of the best climbers I know have been known to have a bong or pipe glued to their chin at one time or another. It is my understanding that most of the Stonemasters were in fact Stoned- masters.
Like any substance that has medicinal/drug properties, weed affects different people differently. Some people can function well, perhaps even concentrate better while some people are complete basket cases when on the stuff.
It's hard to fathom why so many people fixate on Marijuana as a problem drug. My mother, rest her soul, used it to combat her side effects from chemotherapy and it was the only thing that helped. I sincerely believe that for some people it's like Prozac, it helps them function normally and behave like anybody else. For others it's somethig else and those are the people who should'nt smoke weed!
Just my 2 cents!
Gotta go now, it's 4:20 somewhere right now.

Levy remembers.
Stone masters had mandatory safety sessions before hard runouts. If you can't function while stoned, you aren't a Stonemaster.
Oh, how many times have I sat in the IDC and empowered myself while staring at the great lightning bolt on the roof....

In the post-Stonemaster era, some found that shaman-type imbibing could allow a man to become the Gecko, and thus perform beyond the capabilities of a man.
I have personally seen someone (famous) flail repeatedly on a thin 5.11, stop, rest, imbibe, become the Gecko, and then calmly float up the pitch.
Doesn't work for me, but I've seen the Miracle first-hand.

I guess none of you get it.
The stone in Stonemasters does not mean stone as in getting high, it means stone as in rock. Get it, rock. What you climb on.
Climbers don’t get high, not on drugs at least.
Hippies, heads and commies get high on drugs.
Climbers get high on life.
Sheesh, I had to tell you people this and some of you are older than I am. Didn’t you listen to your Ma growing up?

I always thought the war on drugs would make sense if they called it the war on drug abuse.
As mentioned, everyone is different, some shouldn't partake at all, some are addicts, some are recreational, some are occasional. Some people get lazy, some people get motivated. IMO it's in the same league as alcohol. Have a few a week, no problem, but try to live your life under it and it's bad news.
There is no "need" for most people. e.g. I can go to a party and have fun w/o a drink, but it sure is nice to have a few beers.
For most people it *increases* the fear.
I don't know any masters I'd classify as unhappy.

Last year at Jailhouse one of the local characters hiked up with a big 240 volt battery. The box weighed about 5 pounds, a lot of extra weight on a forty five minute uphill hike, but he didn't care. He busted out the battery and then a few minutes later, out came the vaporizer. He partook heavily and sent hard 5.12.
Also this year one of my friends, who's never had more than a couple sips of beer and certainly never smoked dope, sent 5.14.
Imagine that.

Same here (without the 13+ or whatever).

Yep...legalize marijuana and it loses some of its ability to be a "gateway" drug. One then doesn't have to delve into the criminal element to find it. It costs less to produce then tobacco. So grow it legally and tax the crap out of it. A pack of smokes could sell for 25 dollars and still be cheaper then todays product. Then take the tax and spend it on drug rehab and on fighting the more dangerous drugs.
