I am extremely new at these threads and only recently started spending late hours in front of my computer, not able to sleep because of health problems. But if you won't laugh too loud, may I ask a couple of questions? What is a "troll?" And what does "bump" mean? If this doesn't prove I am an idiot I might ask a couple more.

alright ill throw ya a bone...bump is the expression to get the tread back to the front page so people will add more comments and you are probably better off not inquiring about the trolls!

A troll is someone who posts specifically to start controversy and not necessarily because they believe what they are posting.

Oh, that's interesting. I thought maybe it was someone there only to connect with persons of the opposite sex, or some such. Good I asked, I guess. When someone says, "Bump," then are they asking you or someone, or intending themselves, to add a post, simply, so the thread will go up to the top of the forum list?

Hi Pat,
You have made your bones. Now there are no stupid questions.
When You throw out a line and see how many suckers you can hook=Trolling. The bait is usually something controversial but can be anything. The trick is to conceal it so people will actually bite. It takes real artistry to put out a good troll and hook a lot of people. It can be funny or it can be mean.
Nature saying Sushifest was canceled was a troll of sorts. One without bad intentions but still a troll. Add bad intentions and you have the ugly TROLL.
You are correct about the bump. Its just to move a subject to the top of the page so people will notice it.

"bump" is the post, not a request for one. Posting a "bump" reply causes the topic to jump to the top of the stack; the most recently replied-to topic goes to the top.
If you have nothing material to add to the topic, but you want to get it at the top of the stack (or at least on the first page), your reply is simply:

Here's an example of a troll.
'I have been working on a route that has a few chiseled holds but there is a section where I can't make the reach because I am a lot shorter than the person who put the route up, so is it ok if I add another chiseled hold?'.
This is intended to illicit responses and get people riled up about chiseling and not because I really want the answer to such a stupid question.

Moosie: haha! yes, indeed! stating sushifest was canceled was a troll. But not your normal troll for these parts. For two reasons 1) I'm not anonymous 2) i made it perfectly clear at the beggining I was trolling. Still... a troll is a troll is a troll....
and I couldn't help but *bump* that thread with the video of Jingy taking the hilarious crater off of atari.

It is important for Pat to understand that internet trolls have nothing to do with the nice hairy folk who live in the mountains of Norway. "Troll", in the internet sense, is an adaptation of the term used for fishing. ("Trawl" might also work.)
That is not to say that there aren't a few (mountain) trolls in the climbing community, even on SuperTopo. Hairy, smelly, a bit slow - yep! Got a few of them. But they aren't usually bright enough to intentionally provoke others.
Another term often used is "nOOb". This is an all purpose term for novices, or those you want to insult by saying they're novices. I don't know why the middle letters are majuscule.

Usually a troll is just making noise to see how people will react. They are sometimes entertaining, sometimes annoying and always full of hot air.
Now as for bump...
I usually think it's like patting someone on the back. It is a way to show that you like "both or either" the topic and/or the collection of posts...
You post a bump to get it back on top of the list to keep it in focus and encourage it's continuation.

Pat...really nice troll...and very informative for all the lurkers who are scared to death to post a question.
Now for a fine example of photo bombing, see the link below. I started a thread about a rather catchy tune wanting Paris Hilton (ie. her type) to just go away. Locker, super troll that he is, then proceeded to photo bomb it (43 out of 53 posts were his).
Seeing that the thread had turned into a soft-porn/massive gross-out session, I nuked it. All in an effort to help ST remain family-friendly (hee-hee-hee).

Pat, I think this is a pretty good example of a troll. "Climbers disdain me, take cheap shots at me. But not as cheap as mine at them" Probably shouldn't have used quotation marks because I'm not entirely sure of the wording. I know I got the spirit of it though! Forget the novice status, man. Go right to the front with the other heavy-duties. MS

I'm not generally a fan of the nuke, but in your thread's case, it was a needed euthanasia. Don't get me wrong, I liked your thread and the video, but what it quickly become was not at all interesting or entertaining. An excellent use of the nuke. I'm sorry you were forced to use such drastic measures.

TROLL: noun, or verb; trolling a bait, seeking bites, preferably to set a hook and then reel-in The Big One.
Some McTopo trolls are people merely seeking conversation with others, regardless of subject.
At other times, the Troll throws out a controversial lure, to coax a quiescent Big Fish from a comfortable lair.
