Very good IMO. They have always had everything I needed. A good selection of pro, soft goods, local guide books, etc.
Not a whole lot of variety of shoes.
Their prices are retail, but most shops are.

just had a look at their website...can't believe how cheap things are over there. It's like half the price of things in the uk.

Yes, cheaper than UK, but they are more expensive than other places that sell retail around here...

Hell, the moon would be cheaper than the UK at $1.85 to the pound.

I'd agree, good stuff and good service too. They carry more specalty hardwear and Wall specific soft goods then any shop I have ever been to.
I'd put a bullet through my head if I had to work in there all day long, I don't know how those guys do it...

Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder is the world's best climbing shop. It's a museum too, like you wouldn't believe. Good slideshows. It's not like you have to drive to Boulder to get a carabiner, but if you're in the neighborhood, stop in. They had THE knife from Touching the Void up on the wall a couple years back. Thing was scary. Had an evil aura.

The Mountain Shop has improved their "in stock" reliability in recent years but still, they sometimes get sold out of certain items and then it takes them forever to restock the item (partly due to company buying and budgeting constraints, not the Mountain Shop managers)
So never "count" of them having something you need like micro cam hooks or Aliens or whatever.
Peace

You dudes are on crack, the "Mountain" shop blows big time. It has one of the worst atmospheres of any climbing store, and doesn't really make me feel at ease. I mean, I should be able to go in there on a shitty day and just relax, say, with the new Alpinist. Chances are I'd be assaulted with Bernie's mind bullets. Not to mention that there's nothing worth buying there, and if there was, I probably couldn't afford it.

Do they still sell the little Super Topo Route "Cards"? I picked up one there for Snake Dike a few years ago and need one for RNWF on HD. I'll be there next week and perfer to buy the "cards" rather than the clunky guide book. Thanx!

Dan, there are no good gear shops in SF so far as I know. Shoreline was great, but they moved to Washington.
Yosemite Mountain Shop has the best selection in Northern Ca.
Ricardo and Max, you should talk so boldly to Bernie's face.
Bernie is probably the most knowledgable person in the store (though not the only one). When I didn't know him at all he helped me out several times.
Here's a story for you, Ricardo. On my first wall I was so broke I could barely buy my food, and he helped me avoid spending any money that I didn't absolutely have to spend without getting into trouble by not having what I would absolutely need. That's pretty much the definition of an honest and helpful sales person, IMO.

Nothing worth buying, eh? It's the only place within 2 hours of me where I can get my Mountain Masters or replace gear.

No good gear shops in SF? What about the surrounding areas? I find Marmot in Berkeley do be pretty damn good, and REI, while far from my favorite place, stocks a pretty thorough selection of gear. There's also Sunrise out in Concord, they have a pretty decent selection as well...
