Climbing News:
Bears:
The big news at the moment is bears. Specifically, bears getting food from
climbers. This has always been a problem, but this year it's worse than
ever. There is at least one bear cruising the base of El Cap who has become
conditioned to human food and now rips into haul bags regardless of whether
they have anything edible in them. Bad for the haul bag, and bad for the
bear. What's the solution? Break the cycle. Never leave anything with an
odor at the base of a climb (big wall, free climb, anytime when you'll be
away from it). For the moment, it actually makes sense to avoid leaving
anything at all near the base of El Cap. If you so decide to leave
something, hang it up the cliff well off the ground. Bears can climb about
5.9 A2, some can pull 5.10 if they have chalk, so make sure your hang is
good.
Fire:
Anyone who's been in the valley over the last few days knows that there's a
darn big fire somewhere near the valley (the smoke has been intense). Quick
update: the "Meadow Fire" is in the Illiluette valley (south of Little
Yosemite Valley, near glacier point), and it started over a week ago from a
lighting strike. Since the fire started naturally, the park has been
managing it as a "use fire," controlling it while allowing it to do the
natural job fire is meant to do in the wilderness. It's mellowed out at
this point, and the smoke in the valley should continue to get better.
Evening programs:
This summer the AAC is again teaming up with the National Park Service to
put on evening programs at the lodge. Every Saturday night through the
summer we'll be having special guests, slide shows, movies, and other
climbing fun at 8:30 in the Lodge Amphitheater. Royal Robin will be here
this week (Saturday the 17th) and Mike Chase will be giving a show on July
24th.
Coffee:
Every Saturday. Bring a Cup. I may try to move the operation up to
Tuolumne a for a few weeks when it gets warmer down here in the ditch, but
you can count on some good brew in either Camp 4 or at the TM campground
office (by the store).

And another thing...
Thanks for the post Chris. Update on the smoke: getting better. The Meadow fire is up to about four and a half thousand acres, but it's slowed down considerably. The valley is smoky in the morning but clears completely by around noon. I'd say in a week or so things will be pretty much back to clear skies as usual.
Anyone get a rope stuck on Royal Arches? Found it last night.
Cheers,

"Any word on the Falcons?"
Micheal Vick will be back and looks like he is 100% healed from his ankle injury last year. If he can get some protection from a solid offensive line I think the Falcons could be a contender this year. I'm not too worried about the defense since they are usually solid and with some promising trades in the secondary we should be in pretty good shape. IMHO. Funny thing Melissa, I didn't take you for a Falcons fan.

Speaking of birds, I read above that Royal Robin is giving a slide show at the amphitheatre. I've never seen a thrush wearing a crown.

So. Man...Your first impression was right. I had to read your message twice to understand that the bird did not get injured.

Hey Melissa:
I knew you were too intelligent to be a sports fan. Just couldn't resist the temptation though. No hard feelings I hope?

This should definitely be put in the "classic threads" category, hilarious.
Southern Man's right, the Falcons are looking good this year. Healthy, no serious injuries, solid offense against the Swifts, and a powerful defense against anyone trying to get in on their terf.
I spent a few hours earlier this week checking out their perch with a telescope. The young (unclear how many survived) are flying and learning to hunt. After meeting with a peregrine expert (who knows faaaaaar more about these birds than I do), we've decided to stick with the August first date. Relax it's only a week away, you can make it...
So, take a number, first slot opens up at 12:01 am on August first.
Thanks again to everyone who has helped these awesome birds, it's been a joy watching them. Now as a reward, we can all go get spanked on some 5.11
Cheers,
