Hi folks

Just wanted to show you guys what I got modified for big-walling! Recently been aid climbing in the rain and ended up having wet upper body, even with a Gore-tex jacket on! This was due to the fact that water would run from my gloves up the inside of the sleeves of the jacket!

So I got some Kayak-top like inserts added and modified the hood! You can see the pics either below (if my attachement worked) or otherwise at my flikr website http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirtbagger/

I usually just tape the sleeves shut with Duct Tape [TM]

I discussed this with Wally Barker regarding his trips to Baffin and Trango Tower. His solution was kayaking jackets. They have neoprene neck and sleaves that seal off so you don't get water running down either the neck or arms.

yeah Andy Kirkpatrick suggested those dry tops as well! But already had that TNF jacket, so getting it modified was easier than going for a skirt top! cheers dirtbagger

ok dirtbagger -

I took a look at your hanging Jet Boil mod - really neat - did you cut the lid to fit around the clips?

the security loop connecting the two halves is really cool too.

A paddling jacket is probably good in some regards but also pretty bad in others.

It is difficult to take on and off and no possibility for ekstra ventilation. A top in gore tex or in some other breathing material is probably necessary.

A gore tex jakket with latex or neopren at wrists and neck is probably the best option because you called ventilate the jacket.

Is it necessary with latex at the wrists or is neopren good enough?

dirtbagger, nice work.

Hi Raydog

Yeah cut the lid (but now its a bit floppy)! As the little metal shackles are in the way otherwise. I wish they made the lid out of stronger plastic! Although after I did it, saw that JetBoil have now produced a hanging setup! But I guess its still cheaper to make your own then going out and paying for the upgrade!
Cost be 2 bucks for the 2 shackles, and the wire!

Re: jacket! We tested various products, before deciding on the 2mm neopren material! The "real" rubber seals used in dry-suits, needs to be plastic welded into the jacket to make it work! Which is tricky and doesn't work really well for Gore-tex material! We also tried first thicker (5mm) neopren! But the 2mm works fine! I have also sprayed it with a silicon based waterproofing, so it doesn't suck up too much water! Especially important when temps are low! Ideally would be to get a neopren material, which is fully rubberished on one side! That would remove excess water touching your wrists!

Also added a gore-tex bit of material where to sew on and seam-taped the neopren on! The black collar you see. That way its 100% waterproof but is also very solid-ly attached.

Posted some pics of my portaledge fly modifications, which I did to the Bomshelter double!

Doors added

vent added
