When Bishop locals talked about skiing Basin's couloir flat out to the Horton trailhead or Mt. Tom's Elderberry Canyon down to the sagebrush, I was incredulous. Kind of hard to imagine that in sweltering 100F summer temps, but now I'm a believer.

Last week in Mammoth. Then we had another few feet and it's starting to snow now, with an estimate of 2-3 more feet. July should be great Spring skiing.

It looks almost as deep as winter of 1976. We measured 27' on the ground in Walt's Ghetto. You guys are in for some deep snow, its still only mid February and most of Mammoth's snowfall is Feb/Mar.

That photo reminds me of winter of 82-83 in Mammoth. Massive drifts in town, 25’ deep corridors getting into the condos. Spring skiing that year was off the hook.

Is the winter of 69 the only one with it's own bumper sticker?

Some shots from winter/spring/summer '83. Ok maybe it wasn't 25' deep in town, but it was still massive!

Nice to get all this snow. It may slow down the renovation and re-opening of Tioga Resort.

Yeah, unfortunately you may be right. The footprint there is so tiny, a small flat spot at the bottom of that sloping ridge. Anyone with even a cursory intuitive sense of snow pack physics can see there will always be a vector pushing both downward and outward.

Couple more pics from Mammoth '83 storms- we showed up from LA to find our house on Evergreen completely buried.
Only the peak of the roof showing.
Had to do some epic tunneling to get down to the front door.

Yes Neebs- the house was completely buried under that pile of snow^^^ Pretty weird being inside the house. I was a little kid at the time- there was a narrow ice cave/chamber that completely surrounded the house about (under 20 feet of snow). It was total kid-heaven having your own ice cave for the winter. ;)

Wow. Makes me wish I had still had the knees to ski (at least the R one). Recently started snowboarding with the kids but so not a backcountry tool. Mark mentioned Baldy, which is getting plastered, though that is having other unintended consequences since people are having some difficulties getting up that steep narrow road in the snow.
Good thing I didn't have Bishop plans until late March...
