When I was in the Coast Guard I was expected to go out in life-threatening conditions, just as any other military personnel are asked to do in combat situations. Things haven't changed since my days, except now the Coast Guard is expected to do it without pay. Rationalize this for me, my fellow taconions.

Pelosi shuts down Trump on State of the Union
Trump said he would likely pursue an ‘alternative’ to delivering State of the Union in the House chamber.
By HEATHER CAYGLE, JOHN BRESNAHAN and REBECCA MORIN 01/23/2019 12:28 PM EST Updated 01/23/2019 05:13 PM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/23/trump-said-he-still-plans-to-deliver-state-of-the-union-address-on-jan-29-1121068
Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday officially blocked President Donald Trump from giving the State of the Union address in the House, an unprecedented move that underscores how bitter partisan tensions have paralyzed Washington.
Trump and Republican lawmakers blasted Pelosi for her decision, accusing her of engaging in a cheap political stunt designed simply to embarrass the president.
Yet the California Democrat — with the support of her colleagues — isn't backing down, and Trump is now looking for an alternative to an address on the House floor.
It's the latest chapter in an increasingly personal tit-for-tat between the two national leaders, and maybe the lowest point in a political crisis that grinds on with no end in sight. At the moment, the only thing that Trump and Pelosi can agree on is they can't sit in the same room for an hour, even if it's the cavernous House chamber.
"Now Nancy Pelosi, or 'Nancy,' as I call her, she doesn't want to hear the truth and she doesn't want to hear, more importantly, the American people [to] hear the truth," Trump told reporters after the speaker's announcement that she would not let the speech proceed. "It's a disgrace."
Trump then hinted that he may give his address at another location. "We'll do something in the alternative. We'll be talking to you about that at a later date," Trump added.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump insisted in a letter to Pelosi that the annual speech should proceed as planned inside the House chambers. Pelosi had tried to effectively scuttle the event because of what she called security concerns, specifically the prospect of forcing employees not being paid to protect the Capitol that night.
"It would be so very sad for our Country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location!" Trump wrote.
Within hours, Pelosi responded in a letter of her own: Not in my House.
No-one can stop this guy from flapping his lips. But you can decide if you'll let him in the House. Go, Nancy!

I watch this drama from afar, listening to Lyric FM (classical and then some), I see the events unfold.
I was never a Pelosi fan, so to speak, nor Hillary. But Nancy (for once the Trump scumbag cannot make up a puerile name for her), is calling his tune.
This is what America is about. The presidency does not rule. It is not a monarchy. How 800,000 people in Wyoming can have more sway than 39 million plus people in California, does not make sense.
Remember, as I have mentioned before I live abroad, for much of my life, but my family also came to 'America' in 1640. Josiah Bartlett, no not the West Wing TV figure of Martin Sheen, btw, I have never seen the series, but the real Josiah Bartlett, a physician and statesman from New Hampshire, he is in my family tree. He was the second person to sign the Declaration.
America is great, not because of Donald Trump. It is great because of all of us.
EDIT
I do not need blow-ins like Werner (we are all stoopid, except him) or a Russian bot like Lituya to tell me when up is down and vice versa.

John, I wish I could help. BTW your bouldering is awesome to this day.
EDIT
I watched you in the Valley. Keep it up dude (no, I do not want to hear your wife say that.). You are a professor.
Another EDIT.
As I was growing up in the sixties, and as a climber in the late sixties and early seventies, I heard names. The usual, Yvon, Royal... but also John Gill, and John Stannard, not West Coast lads. Colorado and the Gunks.
You mean, there is rock outside of California? Who knew. Go figure.

curtailing restrictions, reducing the function of protecting the populous,
these are all things that were also allowed to happen in the name of making our country great again. in the 2oth century

Gosh I wish, Ama Dablam, Pumori, Alpamayo, they are on my tick list. Most of all I wish for a cure to dementia, the love of my life, Jennie, is in a nursing home. Not far from the JFK Homestead here in Wexford.

'This is her prerogative': Trump gives in to Pelosi on State of the Union
Trump announced late on Wednesday that he would delay the address until after the shutdown is over.

President Donald Trump ended the skirmish over the timing of his State of the Union address Wednesday night by agreeing to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's request to delay the speech until after the longest running shutdown in history ends, a reversal of his previous vow to show up even if he did not have a formal invite.
Interesting development. We'll see what the next steps are.

From the 'Alexandria' thread:
"It's now apparent that Trump and his cronies are prolonging the shutdown because they intend to destroy numerous federal agencies, once and for all. "
A few weeks ago, the thought occurred to me that part of Trump's hardline position was another rationale besides his wall...that shutting down the gov't would make plenty of far right conservatives more than happy as a way of 'starving the beast'.
His base is happy because he's seen fighting for his wall...the far right likes to see the gov't as small as possible...and the American public sees that the pain of smaller gov't is more tolerable than they thought. Win-win-win for Trump & co.

An outstanding editorial in the Washington Post this morning by Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen on how Trump's shutdown is a frontal attack on science, medicine, the arts, humanities, history, and intellectual capital in this country.
"The cost of such attacks on knowledge production and dissemination goes beyond dollars, however. It threatens the very foundation of democratic life that has been central to the founding, and flourishing, of the country."
A must read.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/24/business/wilbur-ross-loans-food-assistance-government-shutdown/index.html
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says he doesn't "really quite understand why" federal workers who have missed paychecks due to the partial government shutdown don't just take out loans to cover the gap.
When asked in a CNBC interview on Thursday about reports that federal workers are going to homeless shelters or seeking food assistance, the billionaire investor said: "Well, I know they are and I don't really quite understand why, because as I mentioned before, the obligations that they would undertake, say borrowing from a bank or a credit union, are in effect federally guaranteed, so the 30 days of pay that some people will be out is no real reason why they shouldn't be able to get a loan against it."
The comments from the commerce secretary came after a senior economic adviser to President Donald Trump compared the shutdown to a vacation. Federal employees should not have been put in their present situations from the start.
