Fairly certain I have 1 broken rib and one costachondral separation, although the same rib has separated before so visually it was already sticking out so the pain there is the only clue. Regardless the ribs hurt a lot. i tried climbing gently at the gym 4 days after and while things felt ok for the first 5 minutes it started to hurt after that and after I left the pain was worse than when i originally injured it (though that could be blamed on my sobriety at the gym).
Anyhoo I'm a little over a week out and looking for exercises I can do without stressing the ribs too much and without too much aerobic stuff (no deep inhales, owieeee). I want to stress them but not set myself back.
And none of this matters anyway cause I'm leaving for bishop to boulder tomorrow but still indulge me so i have something to do after recovering from reinjuring it.

Enjoy your pneumothorax. If you cant breathe deep enough, the absolute last thing you should do is go bouldering or exercise. You need to heal, smartguy. If you can feel your ribs displace, you could displace them enough to breach your pleura or even start some bleeding and score a sweet hemothorax. You could go bouldering in bishop, but you could easily end up at northern inyo with a hemo/pneumo or even a pneumonia from not being able to breathe deep and cough. Ive had a gazillion patients just like you.
Have fun!

When I said no deep inhales I meant REALLY deep. As deep as a sneeze and repeated like a steep mountain biking climb, coughing is fine but sneezing still hurts. The day I posted this I had done a fairly steep hike but with a light pack. Also it seems like he broken rib is mostly healed and I'm left with just the separation of the rib that separated years ago. i'm not as worried about that puncturing anything. what did hurt is rubbing that whole side of the body along the wall here in the ice caves. other than that it was fine
while i'm past the breathing hurts part mostly, i was under the impression i should try to expand the lung capabilities as quick as possible to avoid getting sick. Is that true?

There's a fine balance of too much movement in a recent fx to end up in BuddhaStalin's ER with a hemo and walking around with such a minimal tidal volume as to come down with bronchopneumonia, esp this time of year.
After my episodes, I avoided any upper torso gyrations for 2 weeks beyond cessation of crepitus or movement at the fracture site(s), but was intentionally up and walking as soon as possible for that very reason, wrapped and vit I on board.

hey there say, ... i would say, play it safe, and be able to enjoy
being 'really well' later...
listen to BuddhaStalin-- as, why risk your health...
perhaps you will find some great chatting or neat shares with
some buddies, up there, instead...
cherish friendship times, get well...
also:
long ago, (if i retained this right) ... the 'keeping the lung expansion'
thing, from breathing and functioning well, was due to folks 'wrapping folks up too tight' for healing the
ribs, and thus = trouble... (of which, you are referring to, i think) ...
thus, now, (i think??) that is why they usually do not do that, and just
let them heal on their own-- which is why you should take care,
to not 'upset' them...
*if i am not retaining this all, correctly, do some 'health searches' and
most likely you can get more clear/correct info...
:)

Yes, cough/deep breathe or get an incentive spirometer or take deep breaths and hold for a few secs, do reps
