Quite odd that ST does not feature threads on the FB disaster. We were deep in fake news early on.

When FB first appeared it seemed clearly a scam to assemble personal data that was to be sold. Never touched it myself and never gave permission to be "a linkdin friend."

But I'll admit. Google's data in the hands of a tyrannical administration would be deadly.

google apple and facebook do a lot more than just block a few websites in order to be in china...

xCon, I'm confused by your statement. Afaik, Google and Facebook are BLOCKED in China and accessible only by VPN. Use of VPNs were made illegal in February 2018.

I’m no expert, but technology advances faster than we think, and it’s already way beyond where we think it is. And it’s speeding up. The Facebook stuff is just the tip of the iceberg opening salvo. There’s a world of information about us out there already, and our primitive little ways of covering our tracks or remaining anonymous are going to be trivial for technology to detangle.

Who am I? How many lines of code would it take to figure that out, given the language correlation tools and psychological profiling tools they already have? Fewer than you think, already, today, and it’s just getting worse.

Hold on to your butts! No way that dinosaur is going to get out of the park a second time!!

I might be hallucinating. But. I recall in the very early days of Google, there was a published story in a local silicon valley periodical that talked about them receiving funding from some USA government agency, like a dude on the doorstep with a $100,000 check or something like that in the days before any major investment. I looked for the story a few years later and couldn't find a single reference to it. Now I'm left wondering if it was all my imagination or if it was scrubbed.

Google is the best single company to trap personal info about the biggest chunk of people- in the days before better funded government programs to capture all data on everyone via multiple sources including all ISPs. And given the Trump-era FCC regulations that make it legal for ISPs to collect all info about ALL of your Internet transactions and sell it to anyone they want with zero transparency or notification that they are doing so....

Bottom line: we are all bought and sold and subject to manipulation already. Cambridge Analytica and others like them can use Facebook, or mine every bit of our Internet transactions that ISPs can see already. It's for sale.

Only way around this is to do something like using Onion/Tor routing for all Internet access.
