Only met Tom on one occasion. He said "how long the pigs been here?"
Which I took to mean that he didn't consider me a pig, though all I could say was "I don't know, just got here myself".
Berkeley, 1969.
76 is pretty young to die, but if you're coming back then it does go down a bit easier.
Remembered by many as anti, he was actually very pro.

I came away from reading Tom's autobiographical Reunion a couple of years ago wit a sense that if Robert Kennedy hadn't been assassinated on the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968, all the young radicals, instead of being marginalized by the political establishment, would have been assimilated into the Party and there would have been a Peace Plank in the Party Platform too. They already had a bunch of high-ranking connections like Humphrey and McCarthy and many others.
In this context, Hayden's Point Huron Statement really did have a major long-term effect on American politics. Just too bad the War and the assassinations got in the way of gradual change. The young radicals might have actually achieved a "New" New Deal without the reactionary politics we see triumphant today.
In any event, I'd highly recommend reading or re-reading Reunion to gain a perspective on contemporary political trends today. Whatever else he was, Tom Hayden was always quite perceptive and certainly articulate.

Tom was a friend of mine (which ain't saying much as he probably knew more than two million people).
He was a great guy, smart as a whip, and totally laser like in his analysis of political situations. He asked me to join the Board of Directors of a gang intervention group (Homies Unidos) in L.A. Still on the Board 14 years later.
My favorite saying of his:
“If we appear to seek the unattainable, as it has been said, then let it be known that we do so to avoid the unimaginable.”
We will remember him WELL.

I met him once when I attended an anti-war teach-in in L.A. I was very impressed with his intellect, his eloquence, and his passion for trying to achieve a more just society. He and Jane Fonda made a great teaching team!
I thank them both for the insights that they helped to bring into our society.
There is still so much more work still to be done.

The Port Huron statement was really astounding.
It was reprinted in the Nation a couple of years back.
He was a man before his time.
