OK all you musician types, the threads in the frog of my favorite bow (only a Vuillaume model, but it still the best tone on my fav fiddle). It does NOT need a rehair as it still is good in that department (and I'm hesitant to goof with that as it will not come back sounding the same!), but I am looking to have the frog fixed if at all possible. Problem lies in the fact that there's not really anyone around here to do that kind of work...

Anyone have any leads to a solid person that I can check out, and does anyone know if fixing this issue will change the tone quality of the bow as much as a rehair does (I've not had this particular issue before, so I truly do not know...?)

Thanks!

I've been going to William Salchow (http://www.salchowbows.com/); for my bow-related things for literally 25 years. My sister (Juilliard graduate, currently making her living as a violinist) also goes exclusively to him, as do many other string players in the city.

I don't know if you're looking for someone this far away, but I can recommend his shop with absolute confidence.

edit: he's obviously here in NYC with me, so although I'm sure you can just send him stuff directly, if you need any help coordinating, let me know. I actually need to visit his building (it's sort of the building where all the violinmakers and bow guys etc are) because I need a new bridge for my violin, anyhow...

THANK YOU!!! I'll certainly check out the site and keep you posted! Obviously I've no problem shipping the thing, and I'm obviously not in any kind of rush to have it back, but what with this being the holidays and all, I'll likely wait until after the holiday mailing rush to deal with it... Again, thanks!

How'd your honey like playing in North Carolina? Did they have fun? How's your semester wrapping up?

Hasn't gone yet - actually he's probably headed down to the T-Wall next week or the week after. Meanwhile, it's finally cold enough that he'll probably be out soloing some ice on Tuesday or thereabouts...

I'm in lockdown working and studying... and I need to find a job in Boston ASAP so I can move come January. Any leads appreciated :)

Good luck in the job hunt and in the studies; both can be stressful... You'll do well, though!

I would check out the local college music department. The teachers usually know the best place to go for repairs.
Good luck! Let us know what happens!

In Atlanta I'd check out Williams Gengakki. http://www.williamsgengakkiviolin.com

Other options would be Potter's (formerly weaver's) outside DC in Bethesda, MD http://www.pottersviolins.com/ or Lashof's outside DC in Gaithersburg http://www.lashofviolins.com/

If you end up replacing it avoid Shar.... for the same reasons to avoid REI, the sellout/walmart of the climbing world.

I think there are good luthiers in/around Nashville too, but I have had positive experiences as a customer on the 3 aforementioned places.
