After many years of work, I am pleased to announce that there is a new guidebook for the Black Canyon...
The Black. A Comprehensive Climbing Guide to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is available through K. Daniels Publishing:

At 512 pages, this full color guidebook is packed with dozens of new lines, detailed approach information and pitch by pitch descriptions, pictures of the walls, first ascent stories, historic photos and action shots, ten essays and hand drawn topos for some of the better routes in the Black.
A huge debt of gratitude goes to Josh Wharton, Jonathan Schaffer, Ed Webster, Topher Donahue, Kent Wheeler, Steve Levin, Jeff Achey, Robert Warren, Jimmy Newberry and so many others who helped make this book happen.

some supposedly cutting-edge wall guide No idea what "cutting-edge" you are referring to, but the one and only guidebook to the area is 15 yrs old now - and it is quite possibly the worst guidebook ever published by an author who had done only a few of the routes.
The place could use some more traffic, IMO, to clean things up a bit. Some trailwork, a few anchors, some better topos, then circulate some pix in the media of chicks on routes that need the most work - this would take 90% of the bite out of the place.

Unfortunately the books wont be available on the N Rim, but they should be in local shops and bigger gear stores out of state over the next few months. Thanks for the interest. Stoked to see folks have the newest beta. Lots of things to explore these days in the Black!

Johhnyboy, you're a hoot. While I'm sure this is a well done tome, it probably won't cause much overcrowding (barring any skin-heavy articles in the climbing rags) so good luck with it cleaning up the Black. At 512 pages it's probably heavier than Donini's rack for the Scenic Cruise but I'm sure a deserved upgrade to the area.
