Mr. Hockey died yesterday, at age 88. The man from Saskatchewan who played professional hockey in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, and after whom that kid Gretzky modelled and numbered himself. (9 x 9 = 99.) The man for whom a hat trick meant a goal, an assist and a fight, in one game. The greatest, even if he mostly played for the Detroit Red Wings.

My father worked in a building next to the hockey rink in Houston and would get free tickets to Aeros games in the mid 1970s. We were just kids who knew nothing about hockey but we had a blast watching Gordie and his two sons playing together. Watching on TV was never as good as being there. There was only one Gordie Howe. A true hardman, over 500 stitches to just his face!

The Greatest - bar none.
Yes, as per Reilly's comments, & he joined sub-standard teams for lower wages to play with his sons,
The stories go on and on, He brought the idea of child 'mascot's' for Hockey teams to bring kids to the ice, often helping in getting the skate rental supplied with skates.
small acts of kindness, across the globe, with no hype or fan fair, the opposite really.
As for his complete dominance of his medium. . . A Master. . . there was no doubt
In the endeavor of playing hockey, skating at a world-class athletic levels, throwing pucks &
punches, the way hockey used to be played! That & that from the times of only color commentary to color television his name the great Gordie Howe, Stands out.
He is the One @#9, I saw him skate with his sons, with the Hartford whalers, with my family, it seems eons ago.
Respect, RIP Mr Hockey
Edit: ?? Mighty Hiker? Compared to the Chump,. . . Er I mean, The Champ ? :
G Howe did not shout, or scream - make politics he had no understanding of his vehicle . .,
Respect for Mohamed Ali RIP

Not just Mr Hockey but surely one of the best, if not the greatest, athletes ever.
Playing pro hockey at 52? Are you kidding me? And to top it off by all accounts
one the nicest and most humble guys.

Well, Howe wasn't exactly Stanley Matthews, but did stand for some important things.
As Lord Acton didn't say, television corrupts, and absolute television corrupts absolutely. It has greatly distorted the world of sports, including hockey and so much else. It's now all about business and marketing. Well, the increasing evidence of chronic brain injury to many participants in all contact sports, of doping in so many sports, and of general corruption in things like the Olympics and FIFA, seems likely to lead to major change.
Sports are fine, but I have no time for the distorted version presented on television.

I find it interesting that Gordie didn't appear to have suffered for all of his head banging,
especially the one where they had to drill a hole in his skull to relieve the pressure. I guess
he's the exception that proves the rule.
