Anyone else with an MSR Windburner have problems with fuel compatibility? My old Jetboil finally fell apart and I grabbed a Windburner, only to have problems linking it with a (non-MSR) fuel bottle. I asked a question about this on Outdoor Gear Lab, MSR Windburner , but apparently the traffic there is a bit slower, what with the lack of political vitriol and all.
So, anyone else have problems, or no problems at all, using non-MSR fuel cans on an Windburner? If this is some proprietary male/female link one the burner and MSR fuel, I'm returning this thing, as I've never had similar problems with the old first generation XGK or my newer Dragonfly.

the owners manual says to use only MSR canisters
they are all pretty much the same cost anyway

Cost certainly isn't the issue, but convenience could be. What if one is out of town and the local shop does not have MSR cans? Seems way too limiting. And as I noted in the review, MSR has said for years to only use MSR cans and fuel bottles (XGK, Whisperlite, etc., etc.), mainly I suppose to try to push their own accessories. However, in the past any bottle has worked with my MSR stoves. If MSR's "use only our bottles" has moved from an entirely understandable marketing ploy to an actual mechanical incompatibility, that's a deal breaker for me. YMMV.

A stove working correctly "may be hazardous."

Come for prompt gear advice/suggestions, but stay for the political "vitriol".
Love that...

I retired last year from working as a sales-rep for Optimus stoves. What I know is: any small screw-top canister fuel that complies with EN417 canister specification, which is a standard adopted by manufacturers throughout the world should work with your MSR stove. Canisters by Optimus, Jet Boil, MSR, Primus, Brunton, etc all come out of the same factory in South Korea.
A feed tube inside your stove pushes open the spring-action Lindal valve on these fuel canisters per this photo & text borrowed from an Aussie stove site. I think your feed tube is too short.
A sample unused valve assembly (from Lindal) is shown above upside down, and the cross-section is shown to the right. It is effectively the same thing you find on a pressure pack can of paint or fly spray - some of which are (or used to be) pressurised by butane or propane! The basic valve shell A is crimped onto the canister body. The outer black butyl rubber ring B (shown brown here) does the sealing there. The stainless steel spring E just visible inside the central blue polyamide cylinder F pushes a small (often red) polyacetal valve plug D against an inner black neoprene rubber valve seat C (shown pink here) under the metal top. This spring-loaded valve is why the canister is called 'resealable'. Part F is the blue bit in the previous photo. The disk D is pushed down by a pin located inside the threaded part of the stove body when the stove is screwed onto the valve, and this lets the gas out. The position of the pin is shown as a solid blue line. In some cases (eg Coleman Powermax) the blue pin is actually a tube and the gas goes up inside it. In most cases there is a hole in the stove body for the gas near the blue pin. Given the millions and millions of spray cans around the world, this valve would seem pretty reliable in sealing (even if the flow does sometimes get blocked up). http://bushwalkingnsw.org.au/clubsites/FAQ/FAQ_GasStoves.htm#Interchange

Thanks Fritz! Good info. I'll check the stove out on a couple of other cans and see if it is an issue with the valve.
