Anybody subscribe to Alpinist magazine? I got an ad in the mail and was thinking about getting a gift subscription for a buddy who already has more climbing gear than is healthy.
It seems like a pretty decent rag from the website, but I've never seen a physical copy to verify. Thoughts?

To much snow and ice stuff and not enough foucus on sun drenched cliffs in my opinion but the production is top notch. Even if it doesn't heavily cover the type of cimbing that I'm most interested in, I consider it the best climbing mag available. However, I still can't help but wish that there was magazine this good that focuses on rock climbing instead of alpinism.

A bit pricey, but you lose a lot of the advertisement garbage that a lot of mags have. It's the best thing out there in my opinion.

It's the only climbing magazine I subscribe to.
High quality.
My only complaint is the tiny font used in the text. Difficult for us older folk to read.

"Alpinist" is my Favorite. It's got the best photos and articles minus all the usual spray. The focus is much more toward the trad. genre of climbing...Bigwalls, Mountains. If your looking to find out who won the latest sport climbing comp. or who cranked the hardest boulder problem,it's not in there. It isn't cheap ($46 year,4 issues) but there is less ads and the pages are 9x12" with excellent photos. It's pretty new too (only 5 issues published)I hope they keep'em coming! by the way this is an unsolicited testimonial!

I have yet to subscribe, but have purchased all four issues. I heard it described as the Surfers Journal of climbing mags, which pretty much says it all. Awesome photos, and readable articles, not so much fluff{comps].

Alpinist has the best writing and photos by far, but several huge drawbacks:
1. No insightful, unbiased product reviews (i.e. 13 belay devices all getting between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 stars with one, gasp!, editor's choice. No foul play there.)
2. No good letters to the editor (I was offended by your magazine's derogatory view of women. When will you learn we are not sex objects! And so on.)
3. No bitching about "access" (how some chosspile in North Dakota was closed because locals gridbolted it.)
4. No results, unfortunately, from the Seattle Dyno Comp (Female 10-17: #1 Betty Jo: 1,940; #3 Cindy: 74; #3 Mary: 74)
6. No articles written by Neanderthals with famous names. Just because a dude can climb don't mean he can string words together!
5. The last half of the mag is not random ads and guide encyclopedias and whatever else is back there.

Thanks for the reviews. A quarterly magazine with an annual subscription price more than the cost of a cam better be good, I supppose. Well, I'll give it a go.
