Sort of. If it has lotsa fat mixed in (butter, nuts, etc.), it works for me. Otherwise, it usually burns off in about an hour- no bueno.

It's the best for blowing chunks, especially at altitude.

I get a solid morning of energy from it.

But choking it down in the morning has, at times, been grim.

Some funny laughs happen staring at your bud tryimg to oat it down.

Better? maybe knot :-)

Dale Bard ate pure raw honey mixed with tigers milk protein mix for breakfast one season, ugh gag.

The dude would be so amped his neck became red from the sugar causing his capillaries doing some weird sh!t.

We'd drive to the location to start our approach one particular time and the dude takes off with everything like a juiced up superman he was so amped up.

Except he was going in the opposite direction of the approach.

Amped up mannnn .....

^^^^^ pretty funny!

If I don't have to make it myself,
The ultimate climbing breakfast is:
chocolate pecan pancakes with real maple syrup
eggs (maybe a little salsa and avocado and cheddar?)
 oranges
 blueberries

But on a climbing mission where I have to make it, I can survive with Nutella spread on something.

But choking it down in the morning has, at times, been grim.

Putting chocolate chips in it makes it so you can eat it.

Steel cut oats are slow to cook, but are hands down the best oats for oatmeal. Can't go back to the flavorless flakes anymore. They stick to your ribs better than the quick oats too, but still never hold me over till lunch. Adding lots of walnuts help, but you still need more fat and protien to round things out.

I make up my own energy mix. Raw oats , whey protine ,various dried fruits , various crushed nuts ,some peanut butter and enough honey to bind it. I eat this through out the day while climbing. Keeps me going and is a lot cheaper than bought energy bars.

It is the ultimate breakfast for the majority of humans, but try convincing people of that!

When I was more motivated I ate it regularly, plus fine tuning most of my meals. That year I hiked up the Grand Teton, from the parking lot in under 5 hours, and I had just flew in from Boston. I was 55, at the time. I learned all this stuff a few years earlier, from Dr. Barry Sears, who later came out with his NYT best seller "Enter the Zone". I lost 30 pounds in 3 months and gained 10 pounds of muscle.
I knew very little about nutrition prior to meeting Barry Sears in a small lecture, here in New England. I have an identical twin brother who is morbidly obese, and all my older brothers and sisters are obese. They never learned crap about nutrition, and refuse to learn.

OLD Fashioned slow cooked oatmeal, is far different than instant oatmeal. A totally different animal. I'm not going to bore you with the details, but it is all about the glycemic index. I would strongly suggest beating in about 4 egg whites into the oatmeal, just before it is done plus (very important), one teaspoon of olive oil. This adds about 12 grams of additional protein, and the fat is crucial to the mix.
It's all in the book Sear's wrote. The Olympic swim team adopted his diet, and the year they did, they broke many records.
I could go on for hours, since I totally adopt Sear's plan, but I don't always follow it because I'm not that disciplined. I need to loose about 15 pounds myself, but at 70 years old, I climbed a 12 pitch alpine 5.10, in the Wind Rivers, 6 months ago. It's all about nutrition!
Most of our breakfast meals, on that trip, were slow cooked oatmeal, with added mono-fat using macadamia nuts, which are loaded with the good fat.

Here is a photo of that 12 pitch 5.10. I'm loaded with arthritis etc. but if I didn't watch my diet, I certainly couldn't do crap like this at 70 years old. It's all there in the book, "Enter the Zone". Enough said.

Oatmeal is fine prior to a sport climbing session. Not nearly enough calories and protein for an alpine climb.

hey there say, all...

wow, this is very interesting... as to the OATMEAL...

i'd have thought a chicken breast, or hard-boiled eggs...

or-- well, not sure...

just thought oatmeal might be a bit heavy-in-stomach, but it is true:

it does keep you full...
lots of good ways to cook it, etc...
and cookie, bars, bicuits and waffles, to make from them, too...

HAPPY OATMEAL day... :)
just found this picture, and thought my patty ann marie,
might be good encouragement for you all, to eat:

oatmeal... :)
edit: we love our oatmeal-- the old fashioned kind...

Oatmeal isn't food until you load it up with enough nuts, berries and fat to render the oats irrelevant.
