A silent reel with that old school feel from 1834...knickers, tobacco pipes, tennies and a hemp rope for not falling on.

Miss Gertie Feuz (or she could be the younger Miss Heidi Feuz) decides to sit this one out, while Papa Feuz guides his client along the upper slopes of Mt. Tupper.

Somebody should do something about that.

I prefer the Tyrolean hat over the French beret. I know, it looks silly wearing them both, but that's just me.

Some more about the Feuz family.

sweet vid mouse!

tupper is such a wicked looking mountain from the valley below.

your vid sent me off on a bit of a surf. one of the good pieces of info i came across was this:

Swiss Guides: Shaping Mountain Culture in Western Canada

looks like it was paid for by the consulate general of switzerland...

it's a very nicely organized and laid out [as one would expect of the swiss] overview of the swiss influence in the western canadian mountains...

Mouse! Great post. Those transplanted Canadian mountain guides were "Da Bomb!"

They brought some hard climbing ethics & some Austrian & Swiss culture to the Canadian Rockies, courtesy of the Canadian Railroad, which was trying to make that area a tourist attraction.

The long ridgeline in the last photo is Mt. Victoria, 11,365', above Lake Louise, which still has the elegant raiiroad hotel, that dates to the early 1900's.

I hiked up that ridge from the large hut (Abbot Hut), that sets at extreme left of the previous photo, summer 1975, after bad weather & heavy snow drove us out of the Bugaboos. Only we Yank idiots thought the route was climbable & actually it wasn't, but we survived our stupidity.

Nice period-piece video. I rather doubt if Feuz really climbed with an unlit pipe in his mouth. Too difficult to breathe, and too easy to drop. Also no point if it's not lit.

The regular route on Tupper is a pleasant scramble, but it's not worth hiking all the way up there just to do Tupper. Typical ultra-steep CPR guides' trail! Better to camp overnight and do the Rogers, Swiss Peaks and Hermit traverse the next day. Good value.

EDIT. There are also a number of other lines, mostly longer and harder. These include two by the ubiquitous Mr.Beckey. Access to some of these routes can be problematic.
