... like that in a long time.
I started the morning by heading over to Avery to grab an aerial shot of their beyond awesome new brewery.
Then I headed up the hill prior to noon to pick up Roy and head over for the Kathmandu Restaurant buffet. First meal of the day. Nom Nom.
I was planning on a few hours and then heading back down to catch up on some things and watch my 'hawks destroy Arizona. It was well after dark by the time I left. And we watched football. (SEA VS DEN super bowl rematch - same result - bank it)
This was a good day.
Evel joined us after we finished our food and sat down with a PBR while we sipped our other less elegant brews of choice - 1554 for Roy and O'Dells IPA for moi.
I think we sat there for a good three hours - it's what any JTree dirtbag would do on a low budget, right?
We compared notes on our time in JTree to start - he was of the 80's era and I of the 90's+. They had lawlessness. We hauled kegs to the top of Intersection. Yes, there's a difference.
I recounted the time I sat with Fish and Bill Russell at the Fish compound talking about JTree days gone bye. They shared similar stories (though never one regarding kegs on Intersection). We all wondered - where was the next generation to pick up that type of torch. *crickets*
Enough about whatever I had to say. The man can tell stories. I learned things about things I'd never imagine (like the FA of the B/Y).
Be that as it may sharing stories of two generations of early climbers was engaging and thoroughly enjoyable. Roy is still sharp as a tack as most of us climbers are but to realize we were that close in crossing paths yet never did but still had the same types of stories to tell was just... [pick that word].
Y'all know Roy is challenged now with physical activity but he's got the fight as mad as ever. I've not been climbing a bunch for a variety of reasons - some being physical - but otherwise mental. DOC! hey DOC! help! I've no room to complain. ZERO. I mean ZULU (we never finished the alphabet Roy!)
The stories went from Fish and his history to why Coiler ended up in Humboldt. Names I'd not heard of were exchanged with names he'd not heard of. It went on. And on. and on. We grabbed a 6 pack of some 9% IPA at the liquor store (22oz bottles mind you) and headed up the hill. It was game time so I found my source and wow... who the hell are these guys. DEN VS SEA - same result - did I mention that?
Time ticks on. We age. It's part of the hand we are dealt. You can't fold. I'm not. Roy will not. And even though we sit there with beers in hand talking big tales - tales that won't happen again in this lifetime - I realized something. Errr... no.. I remembered one thing. These 20+ years of climbing that I'm sort of not engaging any more of are the best years of my life.
And out of all of that if there's any one thing I can take away from it all today is the memory and knowing that pretty much the best people to ever enter my life have all been climbers.

Did you fly that copter?To my defense we did sample some great backcountry skiing in Butler Gulch and then climb some of the better I saved on the Colorado.

We had some great discussion on sharing some history. Still contemplating.
I like my idea for a historical guide book for the east side. I suppose it could be made into a move ;-)

Thanks everyone. I had to run back up there and grab my backpack. Roy was appreciative of the TR.
He's getting out and sliding on skis. So if you ever want to tool around up there mid-week let him know. The man knows those mountains better than anyone. Geography, history, whatever.
as much we enjoy STHH's it was really nice with just the small group. We'll plan a few more of these and aim to keep it small. Do it in Ned for a variety or reasons. Like it's actually in the mountains for one.

So on topic nature. Thanks for the heads up.
Conversations that bridge and compliment the generation gap are a wonderful thing to be a part of. With tarbuster and Evel I'm sure it was quality stuff, very cool.
Don't give up on the kids though guys, my 20 something friends are running around there with a bottle of liquid acid as we speak.

Not giving up on the younger generation. It's just things change. Anonymity is a gift. It's mostly gone now. Dirtbagging ain't much of a lifestyle choice any longer. Instead of sleeping in the open in a puddle (JTree 2005) it's Sprinter vans. I've got nothing against going that direction - jealous more than anything. It's just different and the stories are as well. "There I was in my Sprinter van when...." doesn't resonate the same as "17 pallets stacked on the fire and we couldn't dry". I'd trade that for the warm van make no mistake.
If I seem judgmental I'm not. They are just my stories and I prefer them more.
Sometimes I suppose I wonder - are our stories as good as our experiences? I don't think there's an answer but the question is worth the ponder.
The peaks I once would motivate to stand upon are still there. I've just lost that part of me that'll make that happen. And with no regret. But the stories remain. I spent pretty much my entire day swapping said stories and it made me feel great. I'm pretty sure the smile on Roy's face said the same.
