They look the same and according to the reviews they are very very very similar i haven't heard great things about fixe's quality control but i can get them for cheaper, any reason to go for the basic instead of the classic alien?

Because Totem Basics are awesome. I feel the QC is a bit more stringent, and the craftsmanship is fantastic.

Early on, when both the Fixe and Totem version, the "Basics" were near identical, it was pointed out repeatedly that the Basics were a better build and a smoother cam by many folks when matched head to head. Not long ago, Fixe redesigned their Alien, and ST's Outdoorgear reviewers have been asleep and someone needs to step up and look at this again.

OK, on that last part, clearly meant as a joke. They just published a palaverous examination today on backpacking tents with shitloads of tents reviewed. Unless they are doing the sleeping bag reviews and are actually in fact inside the tents fast asleep at this very moment. Hmmm?

Original fixe aliens were much worse than totem basics based upon the difference in overall head width (fixe had caps on the end effectively wide in the head by half)

Don't know about the new fixe evo aliens
