I didn't know the man well but he saved my life in 1993. Judging by the outpouring of love and support by former students on social media, he must have been a hell of good teacher. He always seemed so positive, good energy.
He lost his life after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. He handled his terminal disease with grace, courage, and dignity.
RIP Peter Hayes. Thanks for being my guardian angel when I really needed one.

This is a sad day, but Pete is now free of the terrible illness that really slowed him down the last few years.
I prefer to remember the Peter Hays who could do multiple laps on Maggie's Farm, out back at Stoney Point.
"Oh Pete, was that five or six laps? Do you think I could go next? I'm all rested up, starting to cool down" ......
My sincere condolences to his Family and many many friends.
See you on the other side.

We spent some quality time on the Salmon River with Peter, family and old climbing friends and I remember the joy and spirit of life we shared with Peter. I remember how his students raved about the man as a teacher and friend. RIP Peter.

I met Peter through social media. He was one of the founding climbers of the Ape's wall out in Malibu. He sent me a msg one day. posted it so the rest of the community can see it..
R.I.P Peter

He was one of the founding climbers of the Ape's wall out in Malibu.
One of my first and favorite climbing areas.
So sorry for the loss of such an awesome man and a fine friend to so many.

Shared a bench with Peter at the climbing gym not long ago. Chatted about the old SoCal scene and mutual friends/climbs. That day he was cruising a top rope with an O2 bottle strapped to his back.
Much love, I will miss you Peter!

Whoa....I had no idea Peter was so ill.
The very first rock climbing course I ever taught was with Peter at Stonewall Peak in the Cuyamacas (for Adventure 16). He was amazingly funny, and the clients enjoyed him immensely. I'm very, very saddened to learn of the passing of such a vibrant soul.
