Nice. Congratulations, Kim.
Kim was one of the first climbers I met when, in the spring of 1970, I started spending all of my time in Yosemite and Jim invited me to join the rescue team. I think we stayed in a camp under Glacier Point Apron, near the dump--constant bear intrusions. We also knew each other from Squaw Valley, where he and Bridwell were patrolman and I drove snow machines.
Kim moved on to bigger mountains, and I stayed in Yosemite dinking around on free climbs.
All the best to you Kim.

Great read, met Kim at the saddle on Grand Teton in a raging wind storm many years back. Bridwell speaks of Kim with great admire!
Peace

It was incredible working with Kim to put this piece together.
I was fortunate enough to have Kim connect me to his cousin, who had a treasure trove of images I needed for Kim.
His cousin had to drive to another city and their old home's attic to dig through and email Kim and I precious images...a thorough gentleman indeed.
An Editor can't get luckier than that!
And so many good friends wrote in to celebrate a legend in our midst.
It is delightful as to how much he is loved, respected and honored.
So glad to have this piece be part of our magazine...proud moment for us.
Glad everyone is enjoying it! :-)

A gentle giant. He is a pure soul. A light on the mountain top.
Kim is a true Valhallan by way of Aquarius;
A man of quiet stoke.
There is nothing in him that is close to nefarious:
He's of the gentle folk.

Well deserved is right! I met Kim back in the early days when camp 4 was the wild west... he was a special man who we all quickly got to looking up to. He had a great career in climbing and inspired many of us "lower" in the sport. Congratulations Kim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our Kim Schmitz interview was one of our most popular...
And it was shared so many time on FB...
We were just glad this interview gave a chance to new climbers, who are just starting out, to know about his legendary status.
Kim is truly an icon and his accomplishments must be shared.
Such an inspirational climber...
We got some amazing feedback as his fans enjoyed seeing him as a baby, toddler, teen, as well as his beautiful mother Virginia, sister Dedee and his father.
Kim Schmitz is truly the best, to quote his friend Craig Calonica.

Kim joined us at a party in our camp one night in about 77.
I tried to speak to him, but shrunk away from the intensity of those piercing eyes.
Many years later I learned he was quite easy to talk to. Hahahahaaaa!!

I tried (and failed) to find that c. 1983 Chouinard catalog photo of Kim Schmitz on a portaledge, high up on a Karakoram wall.
The caption was, "A Room with a View".
Does anybody have a scan of that one?

Kim is the baddest of the bad. Kim's first ascent (with Kauk, Roskelly and Forest)of Uli Biaho was probably the first Grade VII in the world. I guided the Grand Teton once with Kim and was amazed how a guy who had broken most of the bones in his body at one time or another could move on rock. He may not walk too well, but that guy can climb. Plus he's a nice guy.
I am honored to call Kim a friend, and am glad to see him get the respect from the climbing community that he deserves.
