Juanito Batten, take a seat - bow down. There's a new sheriff in town...
A couple days ago I called Jody to ask if he'd seen the Mountain Man soap opera.
He hadn't because he's knott been lurking here. In fact, he started an evolution
thread on a forum which got a very-satisfying 1100+ responses, so he's been
having fun elsewhere. Anyway, let's knott digress too much...
Jody was as shocked as anyone - he had actually met MM. As we talked further,
Jody said something to the effect of, "You know, it really annoys me when someone
hides behind the skirt of some Anonymous Female™ while digging up dirt on someone -
why can't they just post under a real name?"
Jody did notice that Anarchonism mentioned that "Jody appears to be clean". So we wondered
who it might be. We really had no idea whatsoever. And evidently, neither did anyone else;
people jump at the chance to expose the hidden identities of shít-disturbers whenever possible.
So I threw some bait out there. I came up with the "Jody called" bit because
Anachronism implied that he invesitigated Jody, and he might think that Jody would have
the motivation to do some investigating himself. I figured the threat of exposing Anachronism
(as if we knew) might flush him out - better to come-clean than to get busted, eh?
Well, a mere three minutes after my post, a whopper was landed. Anachronism's original
post said "You caught me" It also said "Funny that it was Jody - LOL" (since edited).
And also something like: "anyone could have figured it out, no big deal"...I don't buy it!
For 134 posts no one did. The bait was taken, hook line and sinker. LOL!

So Michael Jordan is Angus?
I don't get this. Who Cares about trolls? Why are 1100 posts of nonesense something to celebrate? or be proud of? or a measure of success by any definition? That, is truly a waste of bandwidth.
Cyber jackoffing.

Maybe Lois,if it led to a serious, reasoned discourse that would be great, but the spray was just the number, as if that initself was some sort of measure of success, kinda like "Hey I tripped all the kids on the short bus when they got out." of "I told 1100 people my name is joe, it's really joseph, damn I'm worthy."
Weren't all those 1100 people/posts lost opportunities to actually Do something?
Bowling
Daytime Tv
the mind boggles.
is someone who follows a troll really a bigger loser than the original troll?
Trolling is giving up, it means you have nothing to say.
Okay, back from climbing time to go lay flooring, and see how my bro's Hawaii plans are coming.

Lois, you underestimate yourself =)
I haven't read that thread, but as I'm a (lapsed) paleontologist and he's a creationist, we have traded words on this before, though I like to think we got to a point of mutual diagreement but respect.
But Naturism's thread, ugly as it was, in a sense, had arguable value in a newsworthy sense. I don't think that the OP's 'seceret' identity, had anything to do with its panache.
Lois, I have my moments, but am lower key and more straight faced (painfully shy), than you probably imagine. Though timing sometimes works in my favor and I have been known to get giddy when I've got someone to pee their pants. - but that's merely an hourly occurance in the audiences of, say, Mr walling, for instance.

IP addresses. I figured it only be a matter of time before you put two and two together and got four. Guess not.
Does HK have special access to ST's access logs or something? 'cuz you and I don't get to see the IP adress of where posts to ST were made from.

While that may be true, even a mac really only has normal http access, same as windows, linux, and your momma.
I'm not quite sure what the point of the comment was?
It happened too many times to be a coincidence. This particular individual did have a great deal of technical knowledge concerning computer technology. I believe there is something more then meets the eye here. I do believe that possibly technically knowledgeable persons can tell when another person logs onto a given site.
You can believe is ghosts if you want, too; but unless that person has special access to the server logs of the machine that's hosting the supertopo forums, they don't know any such thing.

"You know, it really annoys me when someone
hides behind the skirt of some Anonymous Female™ while digging up dirt on someone..."
So there was NO "young female" who was "creeped out" by emails from the person in question?
If this is the case, that is not cool.
It is one thing to make substantiated allegations regarding an incident years ago. Quite another to also make false allegations regarding something supposedly ongoing (or having happened in the very recent past).

Hmm, I wonder if I'm the anonymous female? I may have told someone that MM sent me MP3s out of the blue all the time and I never really got why. I don't really think much of it, though; a number of people on the Internet have liked to make me their chat buddy despite my not having ever met them. I figure it's cool, can never have too many friends and adventures.

There are several females on this site who heard from him repeatedly. And several were creeped out. That is true.
I doubt it comes as a surprise to anyone out there that there is a behind-the-scenes communication that goes on among the females regarding some of the males here. (Not unlike the behind the scenes talk among the guys out there). Is this guy calling you several times a day? Is this dude emailing you insolicited love poems, naked photos, songs, etc? Is this guy safe to meet outdoors to climb with (safe in the sense of climbing safety and personal safety)? Is it safe to talk to this persons or will he become a phone stalker (i.e., annoyance)? Is it safe to travel to meet them climbing? Have you received horrible hateful email out of the blue from so and so? What do you know about him?
That said, there are very very few posters here that I've had communication with others about. But, in most every case, the other females have had the same interactions (you know, they use the shotgun approach!).
Some may ask why we don't go public when one of the guys online is *really* poorly behaved First, most everyone doesn't want any trouble and simply uses the behind the scenes method to warn others. With this group knowledge, we can avoid further trouble (except for dealing with continued communication even after we've asked it to stop).
Second, as many of us have seen taking it public can cause a really ugly discourse that made everyone uncomfortable, very personal secrets were revealed, and horrible things said. I don't think it's odd to want to avoid another scene like that.
And third, in some instances, going public with this sort of information can be dangerous to a female. Dangerous? Heck, even without going public with some of this stuff, females on this site have dealt with weirdos out there. For example, a current female poster (who wishes to remain anonymous) received some emails from a male poster who did not like her posts. In these emails, he described gruesome detail how he wanted to violently rape and physically assault her. Think it would be a good thing for her to do to post it? Would that endanger her? If just posting regularly earns people awful emails, why would they be inclined to post stuff calling someone out?
My two cents.

crimper,
not being a woman i dont know all the stuff that goes on.
i do believe however, that outing some dude who sent an email about raping would place the guy in jeapordy more than the woman. that is completely UNACCEPTABLE.
if i knew who it was that did such things id break their legs and ask if they were still interested.
damn. here i am trying to be non-violent, but that crap sickens me.

Hawk:
I think a lot of guys have no idea about the stupid stuff women put up with. And that we learn to deal with idiocy from an early age. And we also learn that going public doesn't tend to help, but instead makes more trouble.
So, while I agree on a *theoretical* level that going public would be the thing to do, I know on the practical (real-word) level that going public is rarely the best way to go.
Most guys are cool. No doubt about it. They don't do idiotic things. But there are some jerks that do stupid things, and I'm always surprised at how surprised you (decent) guys are that it happens. Females aren't surprised usually because, like I said, we've dealt with morons and moronic behavior for a long, long time.
