We are planning on heading down to Leavenworth this weekend 28/29 March, anyone have any idea if the Icicle Creek forest service campgrounds have opened earlier this year? I really don't want to stay at the old people's RV park :(

Or any other place up Icicle Creek to park two trailers?

Shouldn't Eight Mile be open? Beats me. I haven't been there for at least thirty years. Back in the late 70s we used to camp free at Bridge Creek during spring break from EWU (I suppose that possibility is long gone). I cut my teeth climbing at Peshastin Pinnacles, Castle Rock, in Icicle Canyon and at Snow Creek Wall. We even did some bouldering, back when the sport was basically nonexistent. Loved that place. Sorry I couldn't be any help. Good luck!

Generally, USFS concessionaire-operated campgrounds are closed until the weekend before memorial day so the concessionaire can profit from the crowds that arrive then. The privatization of Federal recreation areas has doomed those of us who prefer the fringe seasons; like, right now. I noticed that Staircase Campground in Olympic National Park (no climbing nearby) was completely open a few weeks ago with just two parties enjoying great weather in near solitude. An NPS LEO was busily patrolling, too.

Thanks all. I gave the park a ring yesterday and the nice lady said it's closed until April 1. However she did say that the sites further up the road don't have gates and it's no problem to just show up as long as you bring your own water and crapper..

can anyone confirm? upper johnny maybe?

Eightmile is not open. Bridge creek is open but only has a few sites. I think Johnny Creek has a gate at the entry. You could probably find a spot along the road beyond Bridge Creek.
