Thanks, Tom. Oy. This stuff is soooo badass, I can hardly take it. And I'm sitting in front of my computer. Kevin has to be in a tough place right now. Wishing him all the best.
Re. the whole deal: It must be kind of a pain in the ass to have to super document all the climbing--for the climbing team that is. Back in the day you'd shoot a few pics and call it good. Now there's video, Facebook, online mags, all sorts of media beasts growling to be fed. Ugh.

I think that is the corner Tommy said would be mega hard and found the face to the left. I remember photos of a corner that looked a lot like that and would likely be another 14+ pitch or something along those lines.

Lori and I were fortunate enough to be actually visit the valley on Wednesday. As we drove in at dusk on Tuesday evening, we could see four separate lights up there. I am thinking "wow, this is really happening". While we never saw any climbing, we felt privileged to be there, as others who were in Berlin did when when the wall came down. In a world where human depravity dominates the news, it is great to see the very best that our species is capable of.
We heard that they would eventually raise their camp to the Wine Tower. Are they doing this? We joked that "this climb is so hard they have to climb at night".

Eric Beck, comparing this event to the fall of the Berlin Wall is disrespectful, ignorant and rude......
maybe your excitement can be blamed. it is exciting.
this is not the best our species is capable of, and I am sure Tommy and any other climber who pushes the envelope agrees.
His dad said something along the lines of: we tend to like what we're good at, unfortunately Tommy turned out to be good at something entirely impractical.
He's an intelligent man, it seems...
thanks for the reports Tom!

Phew. So is it do or die for KJ today? I'm pulling for him. I know he'll get it. I remember how dogged he was when Tommy got injured w/ the falling haul bag - never thought of pulling the plug.
Part of the reason I want KJ to send is to see what's next for him. He went from badass highball boulderer straight to the Dawn Wall. What would be next? Next person to free the Nose? Other free route on El Cap? Or some other direction completely.
Would be cool if he and Tommy picked something (even more) impossible and team up again. Hard time imagining what that would be.

Gotta go with Nopants on this one. Comparing a rock climb to the end of the soviet union seems a bit hyperbolic.
