Was looking for a thread on maintaining your tools for ice climbing. Didn't find one so here is my question:
a. Am I gonna die?
b. Anyone know how they welf the strap that goes on the toe bail of your crampons. I always liked the strap as a back up. Looks like it is stamped but also welded
c. Does anyone know a good bush fix?
I could put a rivit in but I don't think it would hold.

I decided that the metal strap serves no purpose. In fact it makes the nylon strap fit in such a way that if your poon did come off you sand a good chance of loseing it. I cut mine off asap and then do a doubble wrap arround the ankle with the nylon strap. this way if the poon does come loose you will not lose it. obviously YMMV

I like it when the welt on your boot is getting a little thin and helps keep it from popping off. which begs question (a) in my previous post.

Trad you got any ice up there yet? Everything came in fat and fast over the last couple of weeks, but warm weather and high water the last couple days have washed some of them away.

You could find someone to spot weld it. I believe that's what they do at the factory. Or a rivet or two should do the trick.

weren't those added to the Grivel Crampons after they came out with their "spring" toe bail (early 90s)?
Was due to some of the early ones popping off the boot welts too easily.

I think they're useless if you fit the toe bail properly.

I don't think they keep the boot from popping off. i do think they set the nylon strap in a possition where it will not retain the crampon properly.YMMV

Tons of stuff was in the last two weeks but we had a total washout starting sunday evening. 52F right now....

Thought about the JB weld but thought it may be brittle and break when extremely cold.
