Mike, I dont know about soup but do you think kale sauted with garlic over grilled trout with a side of scrambled eggs would make a legitimate Black Hills breakfast?
Most posters here are city folks, I need a country boy's opinion.

olive oil sounds yummy, bacon fat sounds decadently fab, I've been eating sauteed kale with preserved pickles of all kinds (from the Cultured Pickle Shop in Berkeley, yummy probiotics) and a couple of eggs for breakfast for a few months now. And some really quality sea salt. Must be dinnertime, I am hungry...

edit: I buy baby kale

Sounds like a good brekfast for a winds lama trip, and if the climbers don't eat it i am sure the lamas would. Also noticed that that stuff is pretty durable. Had a big leaf of it that was left in the upper part of the fridge for a week and it still look good.

Sautée it with olive oil, garlic, chopped almonds too.
I often chop it uncooked and put it in some chili or mix it with salad.
I recently added some to cut up roasted butternut squash, with coconut milk/curry sauce. Delicious!

Chaz, "gag down snails".....

Snails are yum, yum. Kale is too. Chop well and use in an omlet. Great in salads or breakfast cottage potatoes with onion and garlic.

hey there say, donini...

yep...

say, i like to stir fry in my wok, with coconut oil
and onions, garlic, and sweet small red/yellow/etc, peppers... :)
*sometimes i set fresh/or slightly fried tomatoes on the SIDE, that
were heated seperately...

you could add any side food, to mix in, as you eat...
meat, etc, or what, sliced almonds, etc??

you can also ADD whatever spices you like, in last stir of the stir
fry, and change the meal, to whatever suits your taste, best... :)

edit:
oh yep, to lynne and anita:
cut up small, i use food-scissors, and put in salad, :)

I eat it a lot as a soup... saute the kale with some oil and spices, add carrots and celery or other vegetables, and chicken broth. Good stuff, pretty fast to prepare (Chopping carrots is the longest part if you buy the kale pre-cleaned and chopped).

Kale needs a frost to be sweet.

What does it need in order to be digestible? There's just way too much stringy fibrous material in that evil weed. Although I must admit I have really enjoyed it in a well made potato kale soup.

There are so many different packaged kale products on the market right now. Whole Foods even had kalegating event at one of their stores. Did the farmers overplant? It reminds of that army entrepreneur in Catch-22, Milo Minderbinder. He purchased more cotton then he could sell so he coated cotton balls in chocolate and tried to pass that off as food.

Simple.
Feed kale to a rabbit.
Eat the rabbit.

Chop it fine with red bell pepper, carrots and whatever else you have. Make a tahini dressing - (tahini paste), lots of lemon juice, garlic, a little water and olive oil, cumin and cayenne. Let it thicken in the fridge. Oh, add chopped garbanzos to the sald, toss with tahini dressing...yum!

You need to steam or at least macerate the kale most of the time, otherwise it can be tough.

Simple. Feed kale to a rabbit. Eat the rabbit.

Yeah, that would work. But if you're short on rabbits, here's another alternative

Roughly chop about equal amounts of kale and collard greens and set aside.

Chop a boatload of garlic into small dice.

Heat up the wok, get the oil hot in it, and stir fry the garlic until it is just brown, then quickly get it out with a slotted spoon and set it aside.

Lower the heat a bit, stir fry the kale and collards, and just as they are done add a bit of balsamic vinegar (and a bit of soy sauce if you want), toss briefly and serve with the garlic crunchies sprinkled on.

You can bake it and make chips out of it.

Puree with olive oil and garlic and add to sauces - pesto (say e.g. spaghetti).

I am informed by Michele that I eat a lot more kale than I know. I've eaten it tacos, mashed potatoes, and soup.

Have not had any chocolate cake imbued with kale yet, that I know of.
