What cell service/s work best in the Valley?
My Cingular service died in Oakhurst the last few trips. Prior to the AT&T conversion to Cingular and a phone upgrade I was fine. The old phone is long gone so I don't have the old analog+digital technology to see if it might still work.
Thanks!

As of about a month ago the Cingular GSM/EDGE (or whatever it is) works in the valley. Your blackberry will work, as will wireless internet on your phone.
My Verizon phone also works there, but the coverage doesn't seem to be as good as the Cingular.

Anyone with a T-Mobile GSM phone get service in the Valley ? Or does it automatically roam to Cingular (or however it works) ?
(my Cingular/AT&T TDMA phone worked as of a few weeks ago, but I have since switched)

For what it is worth, I climbed Lurking Fear in late Sept. with a Motorola Razor phone with Verizon Wireless service. First night on the wall I made a few calls, but kept getting cut off. From then on, I could not connect any calls, even with four bars reception on the summit (and MANY tries). Was ready to throw my phone away. Of course, once back on the valley floor I was able to make calls.

Let's see?
On Lurking Fear you would be accessing directly the Turtleback Dome cell site. I'm not sure if the Turtleback cell site was ever upgraded to digital service?

Ha - I had exactly the same experience. I loved my AT&T service in the valley and tuolomne. I switched to cingular on the promise that the networks would combine - was i pissed when I discovered this was going to be a muti year process.
This October my cingular sprung to life in the valley - still don't expect much between groveland and the valley.
PS - I have the crappiest and cheapest motorola set they make.

A little while back I was told by a good friend at Cingular that not all phones are equal even if they are touted as so. I was having problems with a Nokia when he told me this. I switched to a Motorola Razor and have not had the problems as before.
I was in the Valley last week (Thursday) and I use Cingular. While sitting in the parking lot (10 feet from WB) at YOSAR I was using my cell phone to call out without a single dropped call.
Not a plug for Motorola or Cingular, just saying...
