Heyo!
Making the big jump from norcal to Denver/Boulder area in the next couple of weeks by car from Donner Tahoe area to the 80 thru to Salt lake, then down to the 70 and over.

I feel like someone has had to have done this trip with climbing and cheap (preferably free) camping in mind, but i'm not finding a generalized strategy online.

I feel like driving thru the great basin in nevada there's not going to be
much to do anyhow, but as soon as we hit utah I would love to know of any hole in the wall Climbing and camp areas situated together, or near one another. anything off the 80? on the way to the 70? and on the 70 once we hit colorado.

What CAN WE NOT MISS to see as travelers, rock climbers, outdoor enthusiasts and general all around nature lovers on the way.

ANYTHING would be awesome, restaurants... hidden camps, worthwile crags, boulders, places to stand around naked with a view, canyons to yodel from!

anything is appreciated friends, Thanks!

Do not miss the Salt Flats Cafe just past Wendover on 80 and the last stop before SLC. Insanely good mexican food hidden in the back of a gas station at dirt cheap prices. A gem.

Forget 80....you need to take highway 50 thru the Great Basin. Beautiful, lonely drive with very little traffic. 1.5 hours east of Elko and 50 miles from Delta, Ut. is the Ibex climbing area.
Strange looking, but beautiful solid rock next to a vast dry lake bed. It's a couple of miles off of the main road on a good dirt road. Great free camping, cragging and bouldering. There is some info. on Mountain Project.
If you want more adventure try Notch Peak. It's a few miles before you get to Ibex. 9300 ft. limestone peak with two great multi pitch (10+ pitches) routes...Western Hardman and Book of Saturdays. Not to be missed! Also on Mtn. Project.
You will eventually be on Interstate 70. About 45 minutes before Green River, Utah is a turn that takes you to the Bob Dylan Wall in the San Rafael Swell....Indian Creek climbing with NO crowds. It's a 20 mile side trip on a great dirt road but well worth it. Free, secluded camping and great climbing.

the crux of you trip
will be meeting the right girl
along the way

and you'll look her in the eye
but your eyes they won't
adjust right and you'll
still be seeing those aspen
trees at 9k starting to change

and you'll will your eyes to
focus on her beauty
and see her and your's potential
but thunder will crack
in your heart and she will
see the lightening in your eyes

and dammit, look right, eyes!
but they won't.
they love the right light;
you know, the high noon kind
that stumbles through a mature canopy
in it's search for your eyes;

and she ain't it. she ain't the right light.
she is standing still, not moving about at forevers per second.

they'll look right through her.
they will.
and she'll feel a piercing notion
and mistake it for fate;

and who knows?
maybe she'll be like my
girl who i also met along the way
and she'll gamble with you
and employ unsubstantiated
emotions like hope and love
and she'll be yours and you'll
try to be your's too,
and life will be a struggle
intermixed with the glee
of diesellin free
on those forever roads
that lead us right back
to ourselves.

The crux might be your second flat on the road less travelled.

I agree with Donini, 50 is a wonderful drive.

As far as free camping BLM and National Forest both allow "dispersed/primitive camping." Easy.

What donini said. I-80 sucks.

I like sleeping down by the Green River, but there's no climbing worthy of mention near those spots.

Sounds like Donini planned the whole trip for you. If you make it to the Front Range, the free camping scene is not what it used to be. The days of sleeping under a bridge in Boulder, and being accepted as a normal member of the community, are kind of over, although there are lots of people living out of backpacks on the pearl st mall. They could probably give you good beta, particularly if you're good at juggling. I used to have a friend with an abandoned house up on Magnolia Rd, everyone up there was a drug dealer or a fugitive, now it's for millionaires. Supposedly people used to live in coal mine shafts in Boulder Canyon and just mountain bike into town, but I'm not sure exactly where they are or if they'd let you in. Also, south of Rocky Mtn Natl Park is all national forest, free camping etc. I think most of the turnoffs from the back road that goes by long's peak fit into that category. This is the perfect time to be up at altitude but it won't last long.
