Aloha All,
The wife and I are headed to Tahiti, and we are bareboating a comfy 36' sailboat. So we have free run in the area of Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, and couple small motu's. Looks like there is rock but comming from Hawaii I am bit pessimistic about any climbing potential.
Does anyone know anything about climbing in the area?

Lots of choss. Bora bora has some really impressive looking choss, though the rest of the island is a tourist infested hell hole and worth avoiding like the plague.
The mountain hikes on Tahiti look killer, though it rained like hell the whole time I was on that island so I wasn't able to do them. I asked around on Huahine, but didn't get a lot of specifics. Some beautiful looking peaks, but the terrain is rugged jungle. You might be able to find a local guide in Fare to help.
I highly recommend Maupiti instead of Bora Bora. I imagine the pass into the lagoon would be very intimidating if you didn't know it well, but you can take a boat from Bora Bora. Maupiti and Huahine were my favorite islands in the Societies.
Are you going to the Marquesas? If so, do you need a deckhand?

I am picking up the chart for the Raiatea, Bora Bora, and Maupiti area today. I will always favor staying away from a touristy spot (I work at Ala Moana?) so having sailed around all the islands here I will take a look at making it to Maupiti. I have had my wife on the bow spotting before on narrow entrances. Sounds similiar to here, some fun hikes, not good climbing, maybe in a few small areas, hopefully some beach bouldering at least.
Only that relatively small area this trip, we'll put the call out for crew once we sell the house.

Bro, been here since 90, Oahu, been hitting that south swell good fun. Tahiti is in Mid november, Been on the big Isle quite a bit isnt that where you are at? So far this year I did the hilo marathon then went kona side for the Honu tri. I wanted to be over there today because Volcanoes NP is opening a few trails to mtn bikers. Couldnt swing it.
So I got my chart and yea we will likely sail to Tupai, Bora Bora and back to Raiatea. Maupiti looks like a full over night sail which if conditions allow we will do but we will be in leisure mode. You know drop the hook, uncork the wine, get naked, have fun. I will find something to climb!

Do try to get to Huahine if at all possible. Raiatea is pretty but kind of dull, and Huahine is drop dead gorgeous and not that far from Raiatea. There are great surf breaks at the pass into the lagoon near Fare that you shouldn't miss. Bring an old board or two with you to sell - the locals will be grateful since they are very expensive and hard to come by there. The guy who runs the Pension Meherio near the good swimming beach is a good guy to talk to about where to go.
Have fun - I envy you for sure. Spent a couple of weeks bumming around those island back in February, and coming home just killed me.

Aloha Nohea,
done a bit of sailing around the big Island. Kealakekua bay, Maui to Kawaihae.
I know you won't believe it but a buddy of mine is a Captian on one of the Norwiegen Cruise line ships and has his pilots licence on all the harbors in Hawaii.
How about 'Ralph' who owned the 'Maile'.
