Scott Carpenter, the second US citizen to orbit the earth in space and (more or less) someone from Boulder, Colorado, has died at age 88.

Carpenter orbited the Earth in Aurora 7 on May 24th, 1962, and was so the fourth human in orbit. His capsule name was in part a play on the intersection of Aurora & Seventh, in Boulder. He was the second last survivor of the "Mercury Seven" (Shepherd, Grissom, Glenn, Carpenter, Slayton, Schirra, and Cooper) - only John Herschel Glenn remains, aged 92.

Now you're really bringing back memories, MH. I remember getting up early to watch live coverage of the launch on our black & white TV.

Interestingly, but rather OT, when I clicked on this thread, a pop-up emerged asking me if I needed as carpenter's service.

He has a swimming pool named after him in Boulder and, no!, I am not talking about his basement after the recent epic flooding. A true American hero!

Rene Carpenter enjoys wearing Scott's helmet at the White House.

The Mercury 7 are special men. RIP Mr. Carpenter.
