So, I recently posted up some 'Everest Curiosities' - This selection of hot alpine tech tips comes from the same source, a pile of books given to my son by the husband of my wife's cousin.

The remarkable thing about this book is that it was published as late as 1950! Things had progressed way beyond what was described in the book. Based on the Swiss Alpine Club's 'Bergstiegen' Which I suspect was a 1930s publication.

The drawings are a hoot with all the climbers looking like stylised Art Deco statues - true mountain heroes..... In particular the giant who is helping a sick or injured climber is a man to have in your team.

Easy to slip on a shoulder stand, that's why i always use crampons.

Dunno, we'd need to speak to Kurt - I'll ask him.

He wasn't in a good mood - but I asked,

He said 'Zat is not front pointing, you stoopid Amrican poonter'. 'Ve haff no kneeed for stupid front poinz. They are for pussies like zat Donini pimple climber'!

Kurt is applying for a job in the Camp 4 rescue team, he's seen what they do, isn't impressed and isn't convinced it's as current as his stuff. (He's a little abrupt but would probably fit in?)

If you have any queries I'll pass them on to him.

after seeing the shoulder and knee belays it doesn't surprise me that climbers started saying "yer gunna die" to one another. Crazy stuff!

and that bat-hammock bivy (Fig 81) looks like some Type III fun.
