I'm flying into SFO next week en route to the Valley and then the East Side. I need to pick up fuel and a few odds/ends (webbing, cordelette, etc.). I don't mind shopping at REI but would prefer to spend money at an independent store -- if such a thing exists. I guess Marmot Mountain and Any Mountain, both in Berkeley, look promising, but I'm open to suggestion. Bonus points for low production values.

Yosemite Mountain Shop, you won't get any discounts but you can probably get stuff...

There is a sport chalet in Livermore too, i think. Fuel and sunscreen type stuff.

but it's a chain store of sorts

Good to see there are still people keen to support the independents... My answer:

Unquestionably, Sunrise Mountain Sports in Livermore, at the corner of First and Railroad. Very much an independent, one-of-a-kind sort of store. You'd be missing out, if you went elsewhere.

Any Mountain in Berkeley doesn't really have climbing gear.

Marmot, REI, and Wilderness Exchange do. Wilderness Exchange specializes in used stuff, discontinued stuff, cosmetic blems, etc, so you can't necessarily expect to find a specific item in there, although chances are you will. REI is just across the street from Wilderness Exchange, so that's probably your best one stop solution. The Mtn. Shop has the best selection, but if you get there and they're out of whatever you wanted, you're kind of stuck.

thanks, I'll definitely check out Sunrise.
I probably will do a first-round in Berkely though, as I'd hate to have to retrace my steps if Sunrise doesn't have what I need... M, the "mountain shop" you mention -- what's that? Marmot?

The Mountain Shop is the store in Yosemite Valley.

If Sunrise didn't have what you want, you'd expect to find it at the Mountain Shop.

I know that Wilderness Exchange in Berkeley currently has a great stock of wall and free gear. Usually they have a ton of climbing gear in the summer.
