Check out what Shanti has to say about the history of Vedauwoo Offwidth! - yes, I have a vested interest, but the there is a lot here that has never been gathered in one place before, Doug Cairns, Layne Kopischka, , Ray Jacqout, the tenth mtn division, Freddie
Also check out Matt's technique overview.
Take the training advice with a grain of salt. Ignore the fashion advice! Never appear at a crag, Esp Vedauwoo, dressed like the fashion victim on page 29!!

Still haven't had a chance to read it. I stopped subscribing a couple of years ago because it seemed there was nothing worth reading anymore. Now the last couple of issues contain good stuff. Might have to resubscribe.
Can I pick one up at Barnes and Noble?

Mike, if you're an e-reader, you can get Climbing magazine for free electronically from the SLC library (city or county library). Look for a service called Zinio.
I would not characterize the relationship between Doug and Bob as teacher/pupil. Though at the time, Doug may have been more well rounded.
EDIT: Only the county library subscribes to Climbing electronically.

Cool library beta.
Could have been phrased differently, but Doug was definitely top dog at that point...

I enjoyed reading this while on a July 4th road trip - here's my comment from a July 7 post on another thread:
I enjoyed very much Pamela Pack's article "Not for Masochists Only" (aka The Guide: Offwidths) in the latest (August) issue of Climbing.
Even though I don't do that sort of wide myself, I got a lot of laughs, especially from the jokes in the short route descriptions.
Most all the laughs, without the commitment, pain, and shredding of clothing!
I'd like to post a link, but it seems the Climbing website thinks the current issue is April 2013. :-)

Finally got to see Pamela climb this last weekend at vedauwoo(as you know, Jaybro). Sheesh, makes me think that maybe I should try out for the Broncos because I would have a better chance at competing. She is as billed. It's a joy to watch.

Picked up the magazine last night. Really nice historical perspective. I loved the origins of Hassler's Hatbox. Some nice pages on technique too. There was a time when Doug was the undisputed ringleader of Vedauwoo.
Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that the style of the magazine is just too loud? There is so much color and geometry and, well, everything that I have sensory overload. I'd like to read a story with pictures. Black text on white paper is sufficient. Color photographs are nice. I'm much more interested in the content than the presentation.
Still, some good stuff in there. I liked the discussion on helmets too.

Totally agree with you on that noisey format sh#t. It's like they are trying to appeal to 13 yr old skaters circa 1997.
Truly amazing, isn't it Grug! She's worked so hard against so many obstacles to make it look that effortless and fluid. I just read Jim your post and we've been discussing it.
