There's currently a UKClimbing thread asking
What is oldest piece of clothing or gear you still use?
www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=533463
and I saw here only Majid's like question to Ed H.
--who responded w/pics of the '70s (1970s, that is)
Chouinard 'biner.

I imagine the Taco can produce a colorful list of such "oldest ..." things
(some maybe relegated to decor vs. use, others a lesser use).

For me, I've some similar if less old Chouinard 'biners,
Goldline (not in use),
and some ca. '94 EMS polypropylene liner socks STILL
looking rather new. Granted, these are used only in
cold months, and much was for cycling --which I did
rather regularly-- though also otherwise, and they
usually are between skin & outer sock, sometimes
though between that sock & shoe. Tubular, with
only mild indication of heel region, and not a ding
at toe from nails !! Even w/the limited usage, at this
decades offset, I'm impressed!

i harbor a (60's?) peter carman klettersack that came to me by way of tex bossier.

it has a denim back panel that is kind to bare skin, and a single lid strap
that threads through a powerful toothy, spring loaded metal clamp.

that strap swings to and fro making for a hypnotic ponytail effect when
it graces the back of a jouncy nymphette sweeping up the trail ahead

I have some Dolt nuts that go with me often. They were a gift from one of my favorite climbing partners.

Kind of reminds me of the Viking sagas talking about swords as if they had personalities. The passing of gear is not a new concept I suppose.

Red down jacket Mom bought me in the early 70's. Brand is Ascente which I believe was based in Fresno. I've washed it a couple times.

I have 3 very old (15yrs ++!) patagonia capilene shirts that I love to wear climbing. The new styling doesn't fit me well and is too long for me in the torso. I've had to start using them for ow's because they are literally falling apart; the lone blue one is hanging in there, though, and still looks like an actual shirt. 'Course, they do smell bad, as only old capilene can do, even when they're clean. :) I will be sad when I have to retire them. But my partners probably won't be!

I have a pair of north face ski pants that are almost 25 years old. Still in perfect condition, still use on occasion.

Also have a marmot 20 degree extra large sleeping bag (I am 5'9" and it is supposed to be for those 6'3" or larger) that was used for months on end during road trips for many years. Still in great shape. There are a couple of burn holes that are the result of smoking various things in the tent. Patched with a little duct tape and good to go.

I have a pair of 45 year old Kronhaufers that still have a bit of life left in them.

I have lots of 40 year old hardware.
Once I went up on Touchstone and my partner claimed my rack was older than him!

I often tell the young guys I climb with I have socks older than you.

A good one too is. I ASK THEM IF THEY ARE SMARTER THIS YEAR THAN THEY WERE LAST YEAR.

Then I tell them I am 50. I may know something about how NOT to do something.

I still often use a Chouinard gear sling made of maroon colored, extra wide webbing which makes for good padding over the shoulder but the middle portion is sown into a rolled, circular configuration for attachment of gear. Bought same in 1972 used, from a climber who was giving up climbing because his wife/girl friend so demanded.

I bought this down jacket in 1976..Class- 5.

Better picture of the label.

I bought my first tent (VE -24) with Reid in, 1977, and sold it a couple years back.

I replaced it with a new VE −24 in... 84, and we still use it......bomber.

edit: I still have two green Coleman stoves from the early 70's...the o ring needs a bit a oil & they are good to go....
anyone want one?
