My son would like to spend New Year's weekend in the Valley with a friend who has never been there. A last minute decision and there are no campsites available. I see that Upper Pines is first come basis only. What's the likelihood of getting a site this Friday night though New Year's?

What are the other options this time of year? He just needs a parking space for his truck that has a pop-up camper.

I was just up there on 20 thru the 24th. Four people in all of camp 4, and I heard only 8 families in all of north pines. Shouldn't be a problem. Remember camp curry reading room. Nice fire until 10at night. And free hot showers at camp curry swimming pool.

I've always found the ceegees in the winter time to be pretty empty

Lower Pines and North Pines are booked, so I assumed it would be busy.

This is one of the few winter I'm not spending time in the valley. I've never had a problem getting a campsite or a hotel room in the winter. Last year we got a hotel room on special in Yosemite lodge for $89 a night.

Not true.. they are closed for the winter. The only campgrounds open in the valley in the winter are camp 4 and upper pines and they are both first come first served. There are no reservations required or even taken in the winter except for a group site in Wawona. I don't know for certain, but I can't imagine that they ever fill up in the middle of the winter. There are very few people who like to camp with snow on the ground.

The reservation site is misleading. It says no sites available when campgrounds are closed, and no sites available when the campground is first come first served.

This is what is open.. scroll down to campgrounds.

I just checked the reservation site and it says only one site available in Wawona, but that isn't true. Only one site is available for reservation. The group campsite. All other sites are first come first served and the campground is mostly empty.

I live in Wawona and was just by the campground yesterday.

John M - thanks for the info. Decades ago I spent a lot of time in the Valley in the winter and I never remembered many people. That was long before the on-line reservation system, so you just showed up. I was surprised to see "zero matching sites available" and assumed it meant it was booked which implied the first come sites might be hard to get. It would be so easy for the system to say "closed".

Upper Pines is first come first served. Trust me, you'll have lots of sites to chose from.

Enjoy

I've been coming to Yosemite in winter for over 50 years, and never had a problem getting a campsite. A climbing partner, yes, sometimes, but never a problem getting a campsite. I think that will hold this winter and next week, too.
