Air search will start tomorrow morning with 2 helicopters one from CHP and the other I don't know who it is yet.
It was snowing off and on all day so air ops was grounded today.
Both ships arrived late afternoon today.
The rangers trained with the direction finders today for tomorrows search.
Stay tuned .... :-)

Jim, you mean "Dill" not "Gill".
There were some ground team searchers sent out late yesterday afternoon to try and pick up the emergency locator signal.
But they got nothing either.
The emergency locator transmitter only has an 8 our battery life.
So they are hosed today as far as getting a signal from the plane along with all that fresh snow from yesterday covering a white small plane.
It's now a needle in a haystack type search .....

That was when Steve Fossett went in, Z. It was just over a year after the crash. Side note, I used to maintain that plane years ago, and met Steve a couple times during the Earthwind Hilton project. Cool guy, shame he went in.

Small planes are damned hard to find even when you're right on top of them sometimes.

Up here in thick PNW forests they are sometimes never found - hoping for a better outcome in this case.

I'm hoping for the best.
I know weight counts in a plane, but only an eight hour battery?

The FAA has changed the requirements for Gen Aviation ELT's three or four
times since they were first mandated in 1973 after the crash of Alaska
Congressman Begich and the failure to find the wreck. Interestingly, there
are no requirements for battery life. Good ones will work for much more than
8 hours though but like any battery they don't do well if they are ignored.
More interestingly the latest design only activates 81-83% of the time!

Nothing today.
CHP will try again tomorrow?
It's a total needle in a haystack search as some of the rest of you above correctly concluded also .....

The original ELTs transmitted on VHF (121.5 mHz I think), they went to 406 mHz to enable them to be picked up by satellite. The current models transmit GPS coordinates on 406 mHz so they do not have to be tracked. Within one minute the location is sent to a satellite.
