We just had our annual ice fest in Southern Alberta. As per tradition we brought a BBQ up and cooked about 40 burgers for the crowd. Other than a portable jacuzzi, what else makes for a solid winter fest?

The only ice festival must I know of is that I must avoid climbing near any ice festival, as I don't like swarms of beginners, picked out lines, and endless topropes.

not having been to one...

separate the groms from the hatahs

that way the noobs don't pick-out the best lines

good accomodations nearby

easy access to the ice

consistently good ice at that time of year

booze (preferably hot booze drinks)

chicks with picks

and a jacuzzi/hotub timemachine

In crowded states i would agree. Unless we are on one or two roadside routes, around home, we will typically never run into another climber for years. Makes for a very small belay pool, so unless you like fiddling with iced up ropes in your soloist - some socialization is nice.

If it ain't climbing - what does it take to make the day enjoyable...

largely agree that it's best to avoid, but sometimes one learns something at a clinic, or gets to watch someone truly great
