So, went to the leap on 5/30/12. Was supposed to meet some friends there who were not in a familiar car to me. I have a golden eagle pass, which is supposed to count for parking fees if displayed. Unsure if they were there, only a couple cars there at the time that didnt have people at them, I ran up the trail to see if they were there, sure enough they were, I was gone for about 30 min while determining if I was staying or not.

I forgot to put my golden eagle pass on display while I did this. Of course thats they day it gets patrolled, I get a ticket.....on 5/30/12....

Yesterday, 10/23/12, I finally get the 'ticket' in the mail as a court summons....in Sacramento....for 11/13/2012.....not so far out as to allow for schedule rebuilding to actually appear.

I have been waiting for the ticket to show since the original date, and have since let it slip my mind unintentionally. I mean, its been 5 months almost to the day. I never received anything until 10/23, which is a bill for $50 parking violation and $25 process fee, or an 11/13 court date. Ive had a letter written up since May with a copy of my golden eagle pass, hoping to prove that I was in compliance save for making it visible. My original violation contained no correspondence for anything but payment, no phone numbers. I was hoping to even go to court if I had to to get this dropped. It said 'court date to be notified' on the ticket, so I assumed there would be some paper in the mail soon. Soon meant 5 months.

Anyone else get ticketed at the Leap? Is this how the FS does business as standard or does this sound like something went wrong somewhere? I feel like there was one piece of missing correspondence from them, but, hey its the FS, who knows?

Soooo, if thats how its going to be, and we are all paying money to park, camp, and stuff. Id like to see them step up the trash collection at the dumpster, maybe add another during peak season, and for god sakes fix the venting on the shitters! Hey we're paying money now, put a solar vent fan on the crapper since they were placed in the shade where the physics wont work.

Anyone else get ticketed at the Leap?

I found out a secret.

They are motivated enough to patrol the parking lot, but too lazy to match your mirror tag to one dropped in the box.

Dirtbagging in fee areas 101.

Also, I'm pretty sure there is a number/address on the original ticket for you to use.

I found out a secret.

You wanna throw trash away in their dumpster? Use their shitter? Fill your water?

Pay your fees. Everything has to come from somewhere, nothing's free. Short of placing it on the dash, I was in compliance, fees paid.

Taxpayer 101.

Youre not saying anything profound here, some of us have been hanging around there for many, many years before there were any fees at LL.

Dirtbaggers are stupid. They think they're cool though. Drink your dollar PBR and continue to be a rebel, enjoy it.

F*cking dirt-bags. I hate when people brag about being so "dirtbag". It's not anything to be proud of. Pay your fees. Lover's Leap is a rad place. It's a fun place to camp. It's convenient for pretty much, everyone. Don't ruin it by not paying fees.

The rangers are REALLY relaxed about the fees. They'll let a lot slide. Especially when it comes to the camping sites.

That's weird that your court date would be in Sacramento. It's either $75 in gas to fight it, or pay $75. Sucks man. Maybe you can call the court and say:

"Hey, I had a pass, the Ranger must have not seen it. I can show you proof I had it for my vehicle prior to the ticket being issued."

as a former LEO of the USFS,, i can only WONDER,, why,, any LEO would issue a hard copy for a stinking parking violation. Have things really become that bad there?

I've seen the "rangers" on parking patrol, they are these two ladies that come in heels. I'm pretty sure its not your standard USFS LEO. I'm not sure they are even deputized (or whatever the term is) Rangers.

Relax, it was a joke, I found out on accident when I forgot to drop the envelope. Also, Im a student so I'm already mooching on taxpayer money with regards to NSF grants, VA grants, and student loans, might as well max it out ifyaknowhatimean ;) . In reality the fees are just giving the government its own money back :)

Not bad, but just hugely busy, the scale and volume require some regulation. LL has always been popular, but with the times, things grow, more people climb now, so more people at all the places. I just dont get how you give tickets with no correspondence, and just have to sit and wait.

It had one phone # on it, for a payment center (automated) in PA. Court contact info "TBA" on ticket. No FS contact info or anything, form was from US Dist Court. No correspondence until 20 days before court date. Is this a way to get folks to just shut up and pay? Not a very nice way to extort money from us.

Ron, welcome to lower taxes. To raise enough money they now charge more and more user fees. So yes.. parking is one way they raise money. And to enforce it, parking tickets are becoming the norm.

those shitters are really unique; those things smell so bad that I love them. they are part of the LL experience and have been that way ever since they were installed. You get to smell them in your nose throughout the whole day. You could probably get enlightened in one of those shitters if you are not careful.

Just a word from a former idiot who thought it was cool to 'dirtbag' (people just like to say it and call themselves that. Same as punk rock, both are dead and have been for some time), careful calling yourself one and being one, they are not so popular, many of us given the situation and location, will rat you out if you are blowing it or have a word with you in lieu of calling authorities and making matters even worse for PR and access.

Crossing fingers and calling the first plausible phone number ive gotten from the whole deal.

The toilets were put in the shade. Whoever was in charge of these things had no knowledge of how they worked. They also need signage stating how they need to close the lid for it to work.

They should have put them in a sunnier spot or dropped some trees to make them worth building. We'd be otherwise just as well with a Johnny on the spot

The heat from sunlight needs to hit the black vent pipe ASAP for it to heat up and make draw. It doesnt, and the cold air makes all the shitwind settle and sun doesnt come in until very late and correct the physics of the whole thing.
***Its actually quite the health hazard potential, if youve ever studied micro or disease, you will recognize the procession of events:

Shitters stink in the morning, someone's GF almost barfs taking her girl sh#t, so she props the door open with a rock. Ive even seen people leave a sign in the damn thing saying to prop the door open after.......sigh

Flies come along by the score and the number of them who can access the poo quadruplifies by eleventy with an open door.

Open door not only lets flies bathe in it, but disrupts the physics of draw when the vent pipe does heat up, so even in the day, with proper conditions, the shitter still wont work right and sticnks to high hell.

Now there are flies coated in sh#t are the majority, not the minority.

Considering you have a golden eagle pass that makes you over the age of 60.

Perhaps you should step back, relax, and let us figure out our bullshit on our own? The new generation of poor-college student dirtbag is actually quite respectful of their surroundings and of others enjoying the area. I think we represent the last sliver of fun, adventure, and youth in the sea of typical patagucci wearing yuppies from SF that drive up to LL on the weekends and leave half their rack on the walls (that we promptly booty on rappel ;) )

Who here hasn't driving into the valley late specifically to avoid paying the entrance fee? gaming the system is part of the history of climbing.

Maybe take a lesson from the 60's and live and let live eh gramps?

Also, If you leave the door and lid closed over night the shitters smell fine. Assholes just prop it open and think it helps.

Annual pass, golden eagle pass. Whatever.
I thought the same way when I was your age. im not 60 by any long shot, but Im old enough to know better now, have a real job, and buy my patagoochy with hard earned cash. the same I pay my taxes with. Im 39 and will spank your ass up and down any street, climb, or mountain any day.

You younger idiots are so entitled and think you are doing all this pioneering dirtbagging and such. Youre not. Dont be a burden on society, cover your ass, pay your fees and taxes. Dont make everyone elses taxes and responsible citizenry pay for your refusal to do so. You cant justify it, youre not cool or edgy. Famous dirtbags like Chongo and whoever are not to be emulated, its neato and all, but that sh#t is bullsh#t.

Just like when you go to another country, remember, you are a sort of ambassador, behave and dont piss people off even though you think you can justify or validate your dirtbag necessity theory.

as fer the toilets,
budda,
bernouli's principle
abides pressure differentials.

the fluid (air) on the top of the vent
stack is free and flowing, thus a low-pressure...

while the air within the poop room is stagnant and still, thus
a relative high pressure.

fluid follows down the pressure gradient,
high to low,
thus the stench moves outta the room into the sky.

who gives a fiddler's fart (not bernouli) if the shitters in the shade?
you gotta get your ignorance straight,
before you start critisizin.

pay your f*#king fine and quit whining

If they wont waive it based on a valid annual pass, Ill pay it just fine. No worries there.

Thing that gets under my skin is the dirtbag validation thing.

Hey, I dont have a physics degree, but I know that those are the worst functioning crappers Ive seen yet. Even the non vented ones at Owens work better. Ive seen some vent pipes retrofitted with a draw fan to improve them.

I wish it was still free, but there were drawbacks, plenty of them. Its grown too much, too many people. It is what it is, we dont have too many options.

I don't think I'm entitled or pioneering.

I just usually have no money so I get around it as best I can. Also, its fun to figure out how the system works and game it to your advantage (And in this case, the system gamed you :) ). We aren't reinventing the wheel, we are just using the lessons of past dirtbag generations to get around this whole no-money issue.

We respect our environment and clean it up as best we can when we are around, new dirtbag ethics are usually tightly coupled with environmentalism and good stewardship.

You are like the dude who just finished AA preaching to his old drinking buddies, really, get over yourself.

And pay your fine, or drive to Sacramento. The system is rigged to keep you from contesting.

They at least were able to reschedule my court date so I have a chance of scheduling work so I can be there. I can at least make a day of it so its not just a wash with the gas expenditure.

They said that that was SOP, and they gave me the first available court date....over 5 months after the offense? Wow thats slow. Not a lick of correspondence until now.
