Yes whey = dairy. Usually a little creamier consistency and better tasting than the vegetarian stuff in some cases IMO... but I love dairy so I'm biased.

I work for a hippy health-food store that doesn't necessarily carry the big-name cheaper brands but we have some definite better sellers.

Our best seller is the Jarrow brand Plant Protein which is actually pea/rice based. It's delicious, but a little bit gritty so I prefer to mix it half and half with a whey protein for consistency myself.

Rice based- Proventive brand powders. Warrior vanilla-blended is pretty yummy too.

Whey based.. Biochem brand unflavored or vanilla.

I don't do the chocolate or other flavors so I got nothing there.

Whole foods if you can eat enough to keep up,
steaks, eggs, baby seals or go with Hammer.

I BOUGHT SOME CUZ IN WAS ON SALE. LABEL SAID IT WAS PURE. IS SUPPOSED TO CREATE LEAN MUSCLE. VANILLA FLAVOR. WAS THAT NATURAL VANILLA? MIXES WELL WITH GRAPE JUICE. KIND OF A GRAPE MALT.

HOPE SOMEBODY CAN STRAIGHTEN OUT MY CONSUMER BEHAVIOR.

MIGHT SUGGEST GETTING YOUR TSH TESTED (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone). I trace all human frailty (in the physical, not spiritual realm) to undiagnosed thyroid problems).

Once you get in the loop though, it's seems like it's infinite.

hey there say, ekat...

i can't really make these often, but back in the married with kids' days
i used fresh fruit and yogurt, or sometimes plain soy powder (none of all that jazz in it, just simple)...

usually just ate a bit of the protein i needed and make the fruit in blender, just to last longer, as it was watered down, and with some yogurt... (plan, homemade) ...

have fun with all this stuff folks are guiding you too... :)

I love Vega's nutritional shakes & recovery drink mixes. The Vanilla Chai is pretty tasty. It's the only shake mix I've ever bought more than one giant container of...and I think I'm on about no. 10 or 11 or so. I like to mix it with hazelnut or almond milk and cultured coconut milk. Mmmmmmmm! I add a bit of D-ribose and glutamine to round it out, and it keeps the Energizer Bunny going...

(Vitamin Shoppe is about $10 cheaper than Whole Foods.)

Proteins are all different - and powders too.

Whey I would avoid if possible, as anything that comes from beef (especially grain-fed) likely has a sh#t ton of hormones - whether that is the beef itself or the by-products, there ya go. One of the real reasons for obesity in the U.S.

Soy protein has estrogen which may or may not be a good thing - know your body.

Hemp protein is one of the best and keeps you from getting Whey Farts. Expensive as sh#t because of idiots in our government, but extremely healthy.

Protein is all about the Amino Acids - really the best way to get them is with a balanced diet.

Get a good multivitamin, coated fish oil and start juicing. Nutrition and muscle recovery has a LOT of factors, protein is an important one of many. 8-10 hours of quality sleep a night, lots of water, replace minerals... its all connected.

I'm sure there are more geeky sports nutrition people that can explain some of this knowledge - for me its only really basic. But still, performance at the wheels isn't always measured in the engine.

Are you sure you need supplementation?

I usually just make sure I eat enough meat/dairy to hit my protein goals naturally, but shakes/powders are pretty unnecessary unless you are aiming for a protein goal that is difficult to get naturally.

When I'm lifting weights hard and "bulking", I'm trying to hit a 200g protein minimum. Eating 1.5lb of lean meat a day can be expensive so I supplement with protein powders to make meals more reasonable. Usually Whey because its the cheapest to get and the most well-rounded as a protein supplement. All that matters is the amino acid profile (whey is pretty well rounded) and to a lesser extent - flavor. Everything else is just marketing.

Of course, there is plenty of "bro-science" going around and GDavis is a perfect example. So you can ignore me if you want and go with what sounds more "cutting edge".

I use a combination of hemp protein, yellow pea protein, and brown rice protein. Plus ground flax seed and Vega's EFA oil blend.

I agree with LilaBiene - Vega has some great products!

I know this will fall on death ears, everybody wants an easy way out, but, eat well, exercise and get a good night's sleep- everything else will fall into place.

I think that most supplemental foods/vitamins are marketing bullshite.

eKat, do you have a Vitamix (super industrial type blender)? They are incredible. You can make smoothies out of anything, especially fresh vegetables.

Um yeah, I'm sure all those doctors working in nutritional medicine got their degrees
on Madison Ave. and are laughing all the way to the bank and not really helping anyone with deficiencies.

Um yeah...the truth of the matter goatboy is that most people want a magical vitamin or supplement to take the place of hard work and discipline. I would wager that my diet is better than most who post here and I know that I work harder than all but a few and I'm doing okay without a magical vitamin/supplement.

Good protein supplements can help and should be considered the icing on the cake, not the cake itself.

^no genetic disposition to thyroid problems apparently. At what age did your hair start to turn grey (excellent predictor). For me it was 28.

Then there's weed, whites & wine

or

living on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine

I know you don't follow the musical world, but some others may catch the drift.
