Wayne Merry has joined our campfire, boys and girls. Welcome! Our first poster from beautiful Atlin, in far northwest B.C. Perhaps he's been thinking about it for a while, as his second post included poetry: http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=1913555&msg=1922899#msg1922899

At any rate, he'll find numbers of old and new friends here, and a welcome for his stories. I hope that there'll be lots.

Werner knows as well as anyone.

Wayne, we never met, but in the early 70's you gave a slide show in the Mountain Shop at Curry Village(I think it was there) about your ski tour over the Brooks Mtns. Was it the British Mtns?

Changed my life! Thanks and welcome.

Hi Wayne,

Welcome to the campfire. It is funny that the Hanta virus and your poem is cause for your first post. When I saw the report on the evening news about Curry Village, a reporter informed us that the mice live in the walls of the tent cabins. "Walls?" Then they show pictures of the inside of the tent that looks like the old off-white canvas, but seems to be too smooth: fake canvas walls, with insulation, I'd guess, well designed to house mice.

Best,

Roger

Hi Wayne!

Just wanted to say thank you so much, again, for sharing your memories of Bill. I posted the story of how I came to find both of my birth parents, and connections to them, right here on SuperTopo.

http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1818126/Speaking-of-statistical-improbabilities

I have been meaning to ask for your permission to post the picture of Bill in the story, and I apologize for not asking in advance. It's my favorite picture of him -- he looks happy and comfortable in his skin.

So, as you can see, if it wasn't for so many folks sharing their stories and memories, I never would have found Bill, nor would I have learned so much about my birth mom, as well. I'm certain you have many adventures the folks here on the Taco would be in absolute rapture to hear. ")

Edit: I will contact Al Steck about posting the photo -- my sincere apology for the confusion.

Welcome Wayne! Such a long time and many miles...

It's great to see that Audrey and you have already connected. As you probably know, she's coming to Facelift in 2+ weeks, and her journey is worthy of your presence alone, but, of course, so many at Facelift would be glad to see you there.

But all in good time, I'm sure, Wayne. If you can't come physically, we'd love to hear some tales and see some photos that you might wish to share.

Wayne is a terrific guy to work with and has been loved to bits for generations. In fact his climbing spans the entire Modern Era. He even rescued a child Doug Robinson when nonclimber Dougie got stuck on Pywiack Dome near the Dike Route. I remember Wayne very fondly from my Valley days too and recently he has resurfaced for some of the big Valley events, seeming even more friendly, more subtle, more real than ever. The people that have worked with him probably are reminded of Tom Frost too, as they are both so good-natured and diplomatic, bridging unnecessary gaps and trouble, always going forward and always kind.

Welcome Wayne! To this day and forever, I can only tie a bowline as you taught me in YMS Basic more than 40 years ago behind the Lodge near Swan Slab. Also on that day, I distinctly recall your advice to climb like the local kids, the Ahwahnechee: stand up and look at the rock, and don’t hug it. Way back then, I knew I was being taught by the very best!
