Lavishly appointed with superb Tom Frost photos, this classic tale of modern adventure on the Salathé Wall is a great read from Ascent 1980.

Anyone heard tell of Shockley the Younger recently?

One of my favorites.

EDIT: Probably the first reference to super-topo in print.

That flake in the Hollow flake crack must have made quite a rumble when it fell out of there!

I love he included the Shockleyism's in the story. No Mistake or big pancake, boogie or bivy or whatever, all of em succinctly summed up the go for it attitude of the day.

Steve,
Thanks for posting this! I hadn't read it since it was first published.

Here is a picture of Shockley from that summer of 1978.

And from last summer above Tenaya Lake.

In the fine print on page 243, there's mention of a "super-topo". He he.

BUMP for Shockleyisms.

What was the route Dale Bard and Ron Kauk were working on? (Last paragraph) Iron Hawk?

Uf, grim opening. Got to be hard to rekindle the mental magic for a big wall after an Act 1 like that.

Are all of the pics from the FA?

All of the Frost shots are from the FA in 1961 by Robbins, Frost and Pratt.

A good example of how superior writing and story telling can elevate and exemplify an experience shared by many.

You have to love the picture Rick posted. Bridwell, Tobin, Graham, Bachar, Karl, Dick, ??, Yabo and Lechlinski.

I just saw Shockley climbing at Santee boulders in San Diego. Heard him use a Shockleyism so I came home to look them up and found this awesome post. Thanks!

One of my all time favorites too. I've always remembered the line "We are up here to get off as soon as possible."
