I recently picked up a copy of The Conquest of Mount Cook written by Freda Du Faur and published in 1915. Another amazing woman climbing superbly and in doing so turning sexism on its ear!
Freda was most active in the period around WWI. A taste of Freda's adventures...the second ascent of Mount Tasman.
A shot from a prior climb in the 1912 season.
A close-up of Freda sporting one hell of a hat!
"I was the first unmarried woman to climb in New Zealand, and in consequence I received all the hard knocks until one day when I awoke more or less famous in the mountaineering world, after which I could and did do exactly as seemed to be best"-A Freda quote from Wikipedia
Much respect Freda!

I just received my copies of Sally Irwin's wonderful biography of Freda Du Faur published in 2000.
This promises to be a great read!
Thanks Sally!

Here is a pic of another female adventurer on Mt.Tasman in 1986. Look closely and you can see two climbers on the ridge. One is Lydia Brady, the other is an American dude climbing in lightweight cordura hiking boots, lots of hard ice on this route.
Here's a pic of the bro's of the day

Thanks Stevie! Great scanning btw.
It turns out---too sadly-- that Freda took her own life.

The Southern Alps thread is all messed up but this needs to be bumped.
