RANGER SHOT: Mt. Rainier National Park stages manhunt

LONGMIRE — A ranger at Mount Rainier National Park was shot this morning, and the park has been closed as a result of the emergency.
The shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. near the Longmire Ranger Station at the park. The initial report listed the victim as a Forest Service ranger rather than a National Park Service ranger.
"Officer down, information just coming in. Stay out of area suspect armed with a long rifle on foot," the Pierce County Sheriff's Department reported on Twitter around 11:25 this morning.
The condition of the park ranger is unknown at this time, Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said.
Units from the Washington State Patrol and the Pierce County Sheriff's Department are responding to the park and searching for the suspect.
Both agencies request that the public stays out of the area.

According to Bacher, the suspect was stopped around 10:11 a.m. by another ranger. The suspect took off in his vehicle and was stopped by Anderson, who was monitoring a road block. Anderson was shot, and the suspect fled on foot, Bacher said.

If the killer was already on the run, you wonder why anyone ever approached in a way that would allow them to get shot. And shot with a rifle. How strange is that? Not only horrible, but terribly odd. I can't imagine that the vic, a woman working for the forest service, ever got training to handle such a situation.

Well, that's not cool. That's really, really bad.
I have many critical observations to make regarding Law Enforcement operations in the National Park Service. NPS LE personnel are routinely placed in harm's way, due to the nature of the environment they operate in, jurisdictional quandries (exclusive, partial, concurrent, proprietary), staffing and training issues, and what I believe is a deeply embedded characteristic of the organizational culture to simply Get Things Done.
Largo makes an excellent point. No way a single ranger should be manning a checkpoint or roadblock under those circumstances. I'm hopeful the particulars regarding the murder of this ranger will result in sound recommendations for improvement, but if history offers any lessons it's likely that any suggestions will be slowly and incompletely adapted, funding to implement recommendations will not be forthcoming and, most importantly, commissioned NPS personnel will continue -- in the heat of the moment -- to insert themselves into circumstances and situations that a full-time professional Urban police department would simply never do.
The NPS is a brilliant agency, and I've been royally busted by rangers and then let off the hook more times than I can remember. Yes, there are many rangers, particularly in the big parks, that are badge-heavy bad seeds that should be shown the door. They are the exception to the rule.
I hope they catch this motherf*#ker and lock him away for life. I hope this woman did not leave behind any children. And I hope those guys (the NPS) take a long, hard what-the-f*#k-happened-here gaze at this incident and make sure it does not happen again.
EDIT: Married with two kids. Compound tragedy.

He'll be hunted and mounted. Condolences to the rangers family. Her husband was working as well in another area of the park. That has to be the worst call ever.

When officers radioed that the suspect failed to stop, Anderson, in another vehicle, set up a roadblock by pulling her car across the road a mile or so south of Paradise at a pull out known as Barns Flat.
“He just jumped out and shot her,” Taylor said."

This is a true tragedy in many ways. Most importantly, this is a horrific and permanent loss to the Anderson family; God please give this family the strength to move forward with their lives without their mother and wife. But, all of us may feel the impact of this murder; under the guise of “increased public safety,” we’ll see more and more law enforcement personnel and presence in our national parks and federal public lands, and /or more closures and restrictions if funding remains insufficient for patrols and presence, and proper training. One another aspect, opening up our national parks to visitors with weapons could be a factor. Once we find out who the murderer is, many questions could get answered.
Condolences to the Anderson family and to the Mt. Rainier staff.

Horrible! Cut down in the prim of her life leaving behind her young family, senseless!

Even with survival training, how long can this guy last in the woods? It must be extremely cold at night. I hope a park ranger gets the opportunity to kill him.

I just read the articles, and then saw this thread. Terrible news of terrible deeds. My condolences to the family, friends and community. The suspect apparently had body armor and weapons in his car. Is this a suicide by cop waiting to happen?

Life....we enjoy it, try and live it to the fullest, have a spouse and children we love, a job we are happy with when suddenly out of no where comes a moment of time that undoes it all.
One single moment that changes things forever......
Sending huge prayers and thoughts of comfort and eventual peace for this family and all their loved ones and friends touched forever by this tragedy.
The ultimate loser is the killer. The darkness in a soul that could move a human to do such an act of evil must be blacker than any of us can even imagine.
