Between the Mars rover expeditions (Spirit and Opportunity) that lasted way longer than their 'due dates' and the Voyager Mission that has just exited or solar system, I just wanted to give a shout-out to American ingenuity and the endless quest Americans have for wanting to learn more.

F*#king awesone!!!

Keep in mind the Voyager probes were launched in 1977, and they are still going!!!!

Look for the National Geographic special on the Mars rovers. I'm watching it now.

What a waste of money. Obama should shut NASA down and build more Nimitz class aircraft carriers.

I actually went to school with a guy now at NASA Ames. He used to help drive one of the early rovers.

NASA is a leader in climate change research. Awesome scientists doing awesome work. As this is an appreciation thread for NASA, I'm first in line to tip my hat to them!

We can safely shelve NASA now that Elon Musk is on the job.

How many consumer products have been the direct result of NASA R&D?

I don't know the exact number, but it's large.

NASA was always more of a ego thing then a actual program for the advancement of man...

When typed on a personal computer that is a hilarious statement.

It's funny when climbers don't get it. For man it's not about getting to the moon, it's how you do it that counts. Our investment in NASA has returned many times it's cost.

I was fortunate to do a student internship at NASA Ames for a few summers, one of which was in one of the windtunnels. NASA isn't just space travel. The research and developments under NACA (NASA's predecessor) and NASA have directly impacted commercial aircraft and personal aircraft, as well as automobiles and big rigs.

It's suprising that climbers who tend to admire boldness and adventure would be down on NASA.

I really wish they get there would come up with a more economically sound form of space travel...
Space shuttles tended to be uber expensive...

The space program takes steps towards doing that, but it takes time. At least the the Shuttles were reusable vehicles capable of extraordinary payloads. A real workhorse if you think about it.

It's a shame to see the fleet get mothballed with not much in sight for the future. I was happy to see tax-dollars go towards NASA. Their accomplishments in space and your everyday life are mind-blowing, and largely unknown and under-appreciatted.

I will be visiting a space shuttle the first week of January in Sterling VA. Can't wait!

NASA rules. In TX, they have a herd of Longhorns roaming around on the NASA property. Cool.

Callie, you're prolly talking about Johnson Space Center? If you can, check out their audio mixing console, my crew made it.

I think they use if for transmissions to/from the ISS.

Dig it;

My bad I was referencing the USSR-American race to the moon as more of a ego thing.
Basically it the "two biggest kids on the block" story on a huge scale.
The technological innovation that came out the the space program is unquestionable. However the reasons for the program in the first place were not nearly as noble...

Well, the reasons for communism, for example, are very noble and yet they consistently bare rotten friuts. The reasons for capitaltalsm appear to be very selfish and centered in selfishness/independence, but bare the most propersous fruits for humanity in general.

I find your analogy lacking based on history. The irony is that NASA performs best when funded by the gov't.

Oh, the irony....
