Why make snooty, cheeky, wise-a#* comments on SuperTopo? That's a question I've asked of myself today and I don't have a good answer. Except that maybe it seems easy to do sometimes.

And it's inexcusable. Looking back on comments I've made on others' postings recently, I'm embarrassed. Each person who posts and comments here [trolls excluded] has what they feel are important things to say, based on how they see the world around them. Just because I see things differently, who am I to try to invalidate their view of what's important? To anyone that I may have offended by my arrogant words, I offer a sincere apology. To a couple of SuperTopo members that come to mInd, I will send individual apologies via PM.

We're fortunate that Chris Mac has found a way to make a living from climbing (probably not an easy thing to do), and now we benefit from this forum that he has created. Compared to other climbing-related forums on the Internet, SuperTopo seems to have the higher-caliber members and content. Accordingly, I'm determined to make higher-caliber posts and comments.

I've posted for a few years as O.D. (old dude) but I seem to have become just a crusty old dude, or worse. So I'm signing off as O.D. Not much of a loss, really; there are only a couple of original posts of mine that I feel had much substance. Going forward, I'll be posting as Dos XX. I'll be giving only positive 'atta boys/'atta girls for things well done, and offering comments and making posts when I think I have something substantive to contribute.

Borrowing for a moment from Karl Baba,

Peace.

Right on OD.

I post almost all good and positive, but ST has taught me to have a more acid tongue....or keyboard lately, because I get tired of the bullies, so I become more like them rather than less like them.

I continue to try to keep it climbing and positive, and bump that stuff.

But it is an election year, so we gotta speak up with our brothers.....

What a fine intention. I applaud you. I suspect that as you resist the urge to reflexively respond to someone with a "snooty comment", you will feel better and better about not posting in that old way. And after a while, your new habit of responding in a new way will become so natural that the old reactivity will disappear completely.

Welcome the new Dos XX!

Many climbers are "down to Earth and 'in your face'" with commentary on S-T. Many's the time I have to (mentally) reach out and grab myself from making a flippant, but insulting response, to a flippant but insulting comment.

While it was a complete lack of creativity when asked to come up with my avatar that is responsible for me using my real name here, I've been grateful over and over again that being transparent and identifiable has kept me from reactively shooting off when triggered by certain people who post here. It really does feel better to practice the sometimes harder path of positivity than to follow the easy path of negative reactivity. I salute you, Dox XX.

Agree with Daphne....Hi D. missing yo!

About your name here.....just a few thoughts. If you keep your regular name and begin to post positively that would show that people can change. A good thing.

A new name does not a new person make.

And agree with the poster that said you can't just post positive all the time cause some of us are way crazy at times and need a heads up, not a positive comment. So if you disagree and have a valid, defensible reason, say so. If you disagree and are just angry or whatever.....my grandma told me, "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all."

Gotta love those Grandma's .....wisdom ladies. Peace and Joy to you as you forge your live into new and great directions. lynne

Rather than tread through a small novel of "snooty, wise ass comments"....

I prefer to say... sometimes they are needed, sometimes its a matter of stating the obvious, and sometimes its a reflection of the child behind the keyboard...

That's why I'd like to see people put their writings in stone.... That way they might mean something at a later date...

The point I'm trying to make is this...

Whenever anyone says anything "to" another, you/we are literally hearing what goes on in their heads.

I hear what you're saying, Lynne, about the name change. I thought long and hard about that, but I'm just so embarrassed by what my online persona had become. Daphne, I'm reluctant to have my name show up with every post I make, because I'm out in the professional world with a lot riding on the projects I'm involved in; some of these projects end up in the public spotlight. I enjoy having a little anonymity in the off-hours part of my life :-)
