So after many happy years in our little enclave of Fremont it is time to turn up the moving music and jump out of the rut! My girlfriend has completed her Master's degree and just gotten a job in Leavenworth starting mid-November. Having spent a fair bit of time in the mountains there I'm really excited for the move although I really don't know the town all that well.

We're looking for a cool place to live, as we have to give up the greatest apartment ever in Fremont, so I thought you folks might have some suggestions or inside info on something. It's just her and I, no kids or pets, but I'd really like to have a garage or workspace since my work schedule leaves me home a lot and I always have little tinkering projects going on. We have two cars and a Chinook (camper) at the moment so parking is important too. Maybe a small house or something? <$1300/mo without too much of a crazy winter commute to Icicle Rd. Ideas?

Also since we don't know anyone in town we'd love to meet up with some of the local climbers or other interesting folks. I'll have lots of free time (weekdays too) for climbing, ice climbing, skiing (although I'm a mediocre BC skier), etc, but we're also into good food and beer. We're nice people!

She starts around November 14th so we'll probably have a couple of weekend trips soon to look at houses/apartments and stuff and then moving. Let me know if you've got a line on either good living spots or good people. :-)

Cheers,
Stewart

Make sure that whatever house you choose matches the tone set by the rest of the town...

Stewart, when my wife and I moved to Leavenworth (we are no longer there) we found our place via the following method: We spent one evening at the Abendblume B&B, which is very nice, at breakfest we told the inn keeper that we were considering a move to the area and were looking for a place to rent. She quickly called a few friends and relators and produced a small list of available places, none of which were listed anywhere. We moved into a two bed condo that day. Not going to garuantee the same service or results but my suggestion is to take a fact finding trip and attempt to make a local connection, it's a small town and a lot happens by word of mouth. Hope your relocation goes well.

Hey Stewart, Have you seen this pot? We just got it yesterday. (I sometimes work at a studio on Shilshole in Ballard). It might be a bit of culture shock over there in Leavenworth full time though- no Lenin statues, no naked bicyclists. Ha Ha. The best restaurant in town is the Italian place on Hwy 2-IMO. Cheers.

Yeah, gotta love the Troll Kieth, gonna miss that big guy. Aren't bridge trolls bavarian though?

Thanks for the advice Rand, we're planning to do something like that although it looks like your B+B is pretty booked up. I was hoping I might connect with someone local online as well. I've made at least 2 or 3 trips over there every year for the past 5 or 6 years but I've only spent a night IN the town once.

There are nice places that open up occasionally Stewart. Shoot me a PM on cc.com if you need beta for the scene. Living on the Icicle is more expensive from what I've seen than in town. There are lots and lots of places for sale now; maybe ask about renting one of them until the owner finds a buyer?

There are a few motivated climbers and skiers in town and more moving in all the time.

BTW - the best local restaurant is, in fact, South. Good mexican food right next to the new brewery. Good margaritas there too. Best breakfast burrito is at O'Gradys Pantry at the Sleeping Lady.

I love the little town of Cashmere right down the road. Very nice place without the crazyness of Leavenworth. Get your Woody Goomsbah on~
I used to live by the Fremont bridge, and my only fear was my cars parking brake giving out and coming out to find my car in the drink!
