Strikes me as strange that this individual could disappear in such a busy area as Upper Falls.

NPS is "Scaling back" it's search efforts and concentraiting on a smaller area.

A week w/o food or water is tough on a healthy individual. I hope this guy gets found soon.

I hate to say it, but my guess is that he's at the bottom of Yosemite Falls and won't be found till the spring run off is finished.

While I don't know the details of this particular incident, this type of thing happens almost yearly. Werner could certainly give a more empirical viewpoint, but it happens.

Unfortunately people underestimate how slick the rock is close to the water. The other lure is that the water looks "calm". What they don't realize is that deep in the water the current is really moving. Once you're in, with the polished rock creek bottom, you're in.

Hope they find him ok.

They did a massive search using resources from several different agencies for days and came up with nothing of his whereabouts.

Thus ... ?

What else can you do but "scale it back".

So sorry.

I was out there on the day of the huge search, it was nice to get to walk through wilderness that probably seldom gets visited, the water is raging throughout the park, a small intermittent stream on the map was raging with beautiful 10ft cascades. Didn't seem like George would have made his way out there, but it felt good to help anyway.

During my Facelift trips on the Upper Falls trail I usually encounter groups coming down after dark. June 17 should have been close to a full moon so getting down even with no light should not have been a problem, provided you are willing to wait for the moon. It would have been a long wait that night.

On the "big" search day, my team and I were searching in a very remote area full of deadfall, mini cliffs, mud, and raging creeks, the likes of which I've never seen in the Yos high country. Unfortunately, all we found were mtn. lion, dear, and bear track. Thanks to YOSAR for a concise and informative briefing and breakfast that day. YOSAR really gets after it...I was very impressed. I can truly say that the 100+ committed resources, dog teams and aircraft literally left no stone unturned. To the more experience SAR meambers, I was proud to be in your company, and to George's family/friends, I wish you the best.
