Folks, I'm packin' up the rugrats and visiting cousins near Boise for a week. They're not super-outdoorsy.
If I take the kids on one side-adventure within 3 hours of driving, what should it be? City of Rocks is on my radar... what else should be?
And where can I buy wolf-spray?

Castle Rock near City of Rocks has easier beginner routes.

Stanley Idaho. Home of the Sawtooths. Great dayhikes, fishing, mountains, backcountry climbing. Cooler temps than in Boise, so good for a summer trip.

Go visit Roxy, bring a carload of crap from California.
Just hiking around CoR will be a treat for anyone. The hiking is mellow, the rock formations neat and you can droll over all the climbs you wish you were doing!
There is probably stuff closer by which might be worth looking into.

Do what the locals do - shoot wolves from the back seat of your car.
Kids will love it - just like a video game.

It's 140 miles from Boise to Redfish Lake Lodge, aka Kid Paradise, easy on the parents. Big climbing is across the lake via launch shuttle, but not for kids. Good play times over there and some close bouldering. Boating swimming fishing hiking lodging food MUSIC

Get your relatives to move to LA. Disneyland, Hollywood, the beach, etc. Idaho is BORING. That is why I moved here.
