Heading into the High Sierra sometime in August this year and am looking for some suggestions.
A group of 4 of us are going on a pack trip somewhere in the Sierras.
We are going to ride horses in and have our gear packed in, and will be hiking out a few days later with all our gear. Some of our group wants to climb, others want to fish.
We would also like to get away from most everyone and not see too many people when camping.
I would like to go climb something easy (3rd class to 5.7)
Others would like to fly fish
Looking for suggestions on an area with the best of both worlds and that has a pack station relatively close.

Thanks
brawa

Hey, I can't say I have any useful firsthand experience or knowledge. However, this book might be useful: http://www.amazon.com/Trout-Fishing-John-Muir-Trail/dp/1571881883

I don't know how adventurous you are from a climbing standpoint, but the best fishing I have found in the sierras, and I suck at fishing, was the m. kings near Tehipite dome. I only know this because I kayaked in there a couple years ago on a head waters trip, and I caught uncountable numbers of eatable fish on a hand line and two spinners. Plenty of flat rocks to fry them up too.

There is an absurd amount of granite here, but little to no beta on routes (bring lots of nuts and hexes to retreat on). watch out for snakes. If I were to be in your shoes, this is where I would pack into. I think most pack into simpson meadows. Although there was significan horse dung down the unbelievable steep NE side as well when I backpacked back in with the wife (and caught more fish on k-mart rods and spinners).

Personally there are only a few places in the sierras I have enjoyed as much as Tehipite.

do some research on the southern sierra, golden trout wilderness. ain't given away any secrets....but it would be worth while looking into that area. There is a pack station I think outa Horseshoe Meadow and some great fishing west of that area. have fun, be safe.

I climbed Whitney last year, and my partners did not bring enough food. They did bring poles. We ate rainbows, and it didn't take any expertise to catch them. WIth the back country permits so limited, it wasn't crowded at all.

If the fishermen are any good you can go back in past Cathedral in Tuolumne and there is lots to climb (cathedral, mathis crest, eichorn, unicorn, etc.) and the fishing is great, stream or lake.
